BLANK MAPS (COLD SPECKS) – S.O.T.W. – REVIEW (70%)

Blanks Maps by Cold Specks is this weeks free single of the week.

This song is a good release from iTunes.

Apple has this marked as an alternative track.

The music track is more acostic in nature with guitar and backing singing, then picks ups a little in pace as the song progresses adding more tune.

The well song is sung by the female singer, her lyrics are very clear.

Overall, this is a nice song to listen to, but lacks any real catchness. The song washes over you and do not grab you in any way. More of an easy listening track than a chart topper.

THIS HEAD I HOLD (ELECTRIC GUEST) – S.O.T.W. – REVIEW (65%)

This Head I Hold by Electric Guest is this weeks free single of the week.

This song is a reasonable release from iTunes.

Apple has this marked as an alternative track.

The music track is a fairly uninspiring mix of drums and keyboard.

When I first listened to the song, I believed it was sung by female singer, however, I finally worked out that the singer was in fact male. The lyrics are clear, the pitch of the song is a lot higher than most male voices. The man’s voice seems to have been electronical manipulated at times during the song.

Overall, this is reasonable track. To me it sounded like a mix between something from the sixties and Amy Winehouse, and not really making anything special in either camp. The song is fairly catchy, so may appeal to some, but it is not my cup of tea.

IN OUR EYES (NIKI AND THE DOVE) – S.O.T.W. – REVIEW (63%)

In our eyes by Niki and the Dove is this weeks free single of the week.

This song is a good release from iTunes.

Apple has this marked as an alternative track.

The music track gives the feel of 80’s music with a mix of keyboard, drums, bells and electronics. The music is a cross between dance and love song, with moments of american rock.

The song is sung by the female singer, her lyrics are clear and generally well sung.

Overall, this track is easy enough to listen to. It seems to borrow several elements from 80s music. I remember the 80s music for the first time around. It reminded me a little of some of Cyndi Lauper’s songs, but it is one of those songs you need to listen to for yourself. For me, the song did not quite work.

HARD TO BE CLOSE (HERE WE GO MAGIC) – S.O.T.W. – REVIEW (68%)

Hard to be close by Here we go magic is this weeks free single of the week.

This song is a reasonable release from iTunes.

Apple has this marked as an alternative track.

The music track is your usual guitar and drum backing track with moments of vocals thrown into the mix. The music itself was OK, but nothing special.

The song is sung by the male singer, the lyrics are clear, but repetitive. The singer was reasonable, but again nothing exceptional.

Overall, this is reasonable track, it is easy enough to listen to, but it fails to grab your attention at any stage. The song was like a mix of country and cold play that did not really work. It may appeal to some people, but for me it missed the mark and had no magic.

LAY YOUR CARDS OUT (POLIÇA) – S.O.T.W. – REVIEW (70%)

Lay your cards out by Poliça is this weeks free single of the week.

This song is a good release from iTunes.

Apple has this marked as an alternative track.

The music track has a strange mix of ballad and bouncy backing track, there is not that really grabs you and the music is a mix of keyboard and electronics.

The song is sung by the female singer, her lyrics are generally clear. However, there is a strange echoing or distortion of the singers voice as if tweaks electronically, whether this is an effect they are aiming at or to tweak the singers voices I cannot tell for sure.

Overall, this is good track, it reminds me a little of a Dido track with a similar tune and singing style, however, due to the echoing of the voice track it lacks the power of a Dido track.
