NEWS FROM THE LAST 7 DAYS (NOV 13 2011)

Here are some of the headline that grabbed the attention this week.

Apple News:

  • iOS 5.0.1 released over-the-air, some battery issues still not resolved.
  • iPhone 4S released in more countries, sold out in Hong Kong in 10 minutes.
  • Exploit in iOS safari found, but rumoured to have been patched now.
  • Apple say that Siri is iPhone 4S only. Will not be made available for older devices.
  • Panorama option for photos hidden in iOS 5.
  • Apple update iOS Apple Store app for EasyPay in stores.
  • iCloud still having issues as more countries come online.
  • US Music Match reset again for developers, but still no public release yet.
  • Rumour: iOS 5 has already been upgraded on 40% of the devices that can run it.
  • Order and Chaos accounts hacked again.
  • More details on Infinity Blade 2 released and it sounds impressive.
  • Amazon give Stanza a final update after complains, but this one will be the last.
  • Atari release a new Asteriods game (Asteroids Gunner)
  • Gamelofts Dungeon Hunter 3 coming soon, screens shot now available.
  • Doctor Who offical Encyclopedia app released. Very good, but expensive. 

In other tech news:

  • HP hold a meeting of all webOS staff and tell them they have still not decided, and to wait another month.
  • Adobe stop development of Flash for mobile. RIM have suggested they want to develop it now.
  • Rumours that Silverlight may also be on its way out as well. 
  • Mobile gaming market now belongs to Android and iOS (Nintendo down from 70% to 36% in two years)
  • Amazon increase production orders for the Kindle Fire (could be 5 millions units in total.)
  • Amazon purchase iOS develoers Yap (maybe looking at voice control for Kindle)
  • Steam gaming service is hacked.
  • Logitech admit a $100 million lost on the Google TV.
  • Face recognition on the Android 4.0 can be fooled into unlocking by a photo.
  • Barnes and Noble update the Nook Tablet in the US.

  • Apple make Garageband universal.
  • Apple plan to spend $7 billion on retail and cloud operations.
  • Apple trial the self-checkout using the iOS App at retail stores.
  • Apple releases iOS 5.0.2 to developers.
  • Apple updates iTune Match for developers, but still no public release.
  • Apple confirm a battery bug with a limited number of iOS 5 devices.
  • Rumour: CBS turned down a potential TV deal with Apple.
  • Rumour: Apple planning a radical overhaul in their product lines in 2012.
  • Google release and then pull their new Gmail app for iOS.
  • Siri suffered another short outage and confirm as uses around 64K of data.
  • Developers concerned with the new App-Cleaning in the next version of iOS 5.
  • Dungeon Hunter 3 confirmed for Christmas release.
  • Glu show their product line due for release before Christmas.
  • Stanza app appears forever broken with iOS 5, as Amazon who own the product seem in no rush to fix it.

  • HP start selling a new tablet, but it is a slate running Windows.
  • Google Reader redesign angers many users as some features are removed.
  • Google change there search as they want the + system for their social feature.
  • LG electronics issues shares to top up its finances.
  • RIM’s stock falls below their book value.
  • Sony forecast a $1.2 billion loss for the year.
  • Microsofts famous Courier tablet was killed off by Bill Gates.
  • Angry Birds tops half a billion downloads.
  • Kindle lending library is now available in the US, but non of the big six sellers are offering their books.

  • Steve Jobs Bio released and immediately becomes the No:1 book.
  • Apple post Steve Jobs tribute event video.
  • Job’s Bio claims that Job’s had worked out a way to make a true Television by Apple.
  • MacBook Pro range updated – minor updates only.
  • iPod celebrates its 10th Year.
  • Apple update iPhoto, now 9.2.1.
  • Apple update Apple TV software, now 4.4.2.
  • Newstands subscriptions jump 268%.
  • Apple give away copies of Jetpack Joyride using facebook promo codes.
  • Apple update HP printer drivers and Thunderbolt software.
  • Apple employees in Italy strike before iPhone 4S release.
  • Users report issues with battery life on the iPhone 4S, many due to notification system, but not all.
  • Rumour: Apple has purhased another 3D mapping company C3 Technologies.
  • Rumour: Apple Engineers investigating users battery issues with iPhone 4S.
  • Rumour: Apple will release a TV in 2012. Channels could be Apps.
  • Rumour: Apple exploring gesture controls for mobile devices using camera.
  • Rumour: iTunes match will soon be available in the U.S.
  • Rumour: Classic game – The Longest Journey – could be coming soon to iOS.
  • Siri hacked to work on other iOS devices. 
  • Lots of Halloween sales.
  • BioWare working on an iOS Mass Effect 3 tie-in.

In other tech news:

  • HP plan to keep their PC business, future not so clear for webOS.
  • Rumour: HP could shut down webOS section in November.
  • Several of HP’s key webOS staff leave, Richard Kerris moves to Nokia.
  • Nokia show first Window phones – Lumia. The press are generally impressed. Spains speakers no so much as it translates as “Hooker / Call Girl”
  • Smartphone sales decline for the first time, just before iPhone 4S release, as everyone waited for iPhone news.
  • Nintendo continue to make a loss but to the rise of mobile gaming and not selling their titles on iOS.
  • Amazon to introduce new Kindle format, but not compatiable with their older devices. 
  • Android fragmentation should end with Ice Cream Sandwich, just make sure you buy a new photo with it.
  • Rumour: Google concerned by Siri search, as nowhere to place ads.

  • Apple reports fourth quarter results – Massive profits even with the iPhone 4S not included. 
  • Apple sells 4 million iPhone 4S’s in opening weekend.
  • AT&T see tremedous demand for the iPhone 3GS as it is now free with a contract.
  • Apple announces iOS 5 tech talks world tour.
  • iPhone 4S and Siri gets first TV ad.
  • Empty Newsstand gets a record number of magazine app subscriptions.
  • Apple pushing hard to get users to update to iOS 5.
  • Rumour: Apple Testing a 7 inch tablet (unlikely in my view)
  • Order and Chaos Online gets hacked, Gameloft say to change your Gameloft account passwords.
  • Soiul Calibur is coming to iOS.
  • Merlin coming to iOS.
  • Goodreader adds iCloud support.

In other tech news:

  • Samsung and Google launch Galaxy Nexus with 4.65 inch screen.
  • Amazon addresses privacy on Silk browser (if you don’t want the extra speed, switch off server caching)
  • Andy Rubins says “Apps should not be tablet specific” and “Phones should not be an assistant.” 
  • Foxconn rumoured to be working on Kindle Fire 2 already.
  • Samsung gets into more hot water using an iOS screen shot on its own website.

Here are some of the headline that grabbed the attention this week, and there has been a lot.

Apple News:

  • iOS 5 released – slow to download and some minor issues on the first day.
  • iPhone 4S to the usual queues and the best iPhone release to date.
  • iPhone 4S Siri and Camera given great reviews. 
  • iCloud and Siri have minor outages, but generally work well.
  • Lots of software updates for iCloud and iOS 5 support.
  • Apple Stock Hits a all time high.
  • Newstand, Cards and Find my Friends now available in iOS 5.
  • Apple TV gets an OS update.
  • Rumour: Samsung Lawyer has issues identifying his employers tablet from a distance.
  • Rumour: Apple in talks to bring movies to iCloud.
  • Mobile Me users converting to iCloud get 20GB for free until June 2012.
  • iFixIT teardown confirms 512MB in iPhone 4S.
  • Battlefield 3 Afterstock coming to iOS.
  • Another EA Sale, great for new iPhone 4S owners.

In other tech news:

  • Atari founder talks about the end of consoles.
  • Square now processing $2 billions in payments per year (via iOS and Android Apps).
  • Audible launch Web-Based App.
  • Dell World a lack luster event.
  • Samsung and Google event gets a new date.
