MEORG! [TOUCHPAD] – REVIEW (87%)

MeOrg! is a springpad client released by Sven Ziegler.

“Do you know those moments where you wish to have your notes and reminders on hand immediately, wherever you are? With MeOrg we offer you the opportunity to gather everything that is important to you neatly arranged and sorted in an incomplex app for your webOS-gadget with instant availability!”

NB: You need to a Springpad.com account in order to use this application.

When you first load up the application you will be asked to link up your springpad.com account to the application. This is simple and painless, and once done the sync does not take to long at all.

I have been using Springpad myself for several months now, and I have to say that even though the springpad website works well on the Touchpad, it is not wear near as snappy or easy to navigate at MeOrg. The offical springpad site feels like it has been made to be beautiful, but this app has been built more productivity.

Once, everything is synced, you can start using the application. MeOrg has a nice clear layout and it makes it simple to find existing items and to add new ones.

MeOrg has a two column layout with the left hand side offering the items, and the right side showing the selected items. You can expand the right column to full screen, but often this is not needed to as the right side normally displays the item clearly.

There is a bottom toolbar that has icons for syncing, adding new items and then depending on the item select you can print or share the item.

There is a good search option and filtering works well, so you should be able to find anything you are looking for quickly. I like the way the search limits the list as you type highlighting the words that match.

There are preferences to modify font sizes and font family if you wish to change for the default display.

If you have a URL in a note, you can select from the options if you view it in Advanced Browser if you have it installed.

The user interface is excellent. The application is easy to use and generally displays of the items in a clean and well formatted manner.

On the upside:

  • Excellent User Interface.
  • Very good search options.
  • Nearly fully featured with all of the springpad functions supported (tags, etc)

On the downside:

  • The odd spelling mistake (in help and attachment screen) – easily fixed.
  • When you tap on photos in notes they are displayed, but a little smaller than the original. You can download from the note to view correctly.

Overall, this is an excellent application. I am a big fan of Evernote and Springpad. I am very happy now that both now have great support on the Touchpad now. I feel that MeOrg! gives the best support out of the two. For my Springpad needs, MeOrg! does everything that I need and to be honest better than the official Springpad app on the iPad. If you use Springpad you need this application.

SECUSTORE [IOS] – REVIEW (89%)

SecuStore is a password manager / secure storage utility released by MaKleSoft.

“Unique features like the built-in password generator and cloud synchronization make SecuStore one of the most powerful password managers out there. And its absolute flexibility allows you to use it for much more than just storing passwords. SecuStore is a cross-platform password manager / secure storage utility currently available for webOS, iOS and Chrome. Soon to be available in the Mac App Store!”

This application allows you keep all your passwords and other information safe and secure in one application.

The application lets you set up folder (sets) in which you can store the passwords and data. So you could have a work and home folder with different locking passwords containing the various data.

Once you have created a folder, with a locking password, you can begin to add passwords and data into the project. There are a number of pre-defined templates available or you can create your own. These templates include Internet, Pin, CreditCards, License Keys etc.

When you add data into the application you get the data set up by the template (so if a website – name, URL, login name, password and notes) If you have an existing account you can just type in the data you are already using. If you are creating a new account, then the application offers a random password creator which gives a list of weak to very strong passwords to select from.

All the data can be synced to other devices by the use of a dropbox account and the set up is very simple and quick.

The biggest advantage of this on the iOS is of course you do not have to remember all your password, just the one from the secure folder. Then you can copy the password and paste it into the website or accounts page that is asking for the data.

The user interface is very good and easy to use.

On the upside:

  • Able to generate complex passwords and save them on the move.
  • One place for all your password, and they are available when you forget them.
  • Universal Application

On the downside:

  • Just do not forget your master folder passwords
  • Leaves you wishing that Advanced Browser was out of iOS too.

Overall, this is an excellent application for the keeping your passwords and other information safe and secure. For me 1password has been my password manager of choice for several years now, but MaKleSoft are expanding SecuStore all the time, with Chrome and webOS support with a Mac version on the way (which I hope is priced as reasonably as the other apps). At this price I think SecuStore may well replace 1password for me in the near future.

PDFPEN [IPAD] – REVIEW (80%)

PDFpen is a PDF editing tool released by SmileOnMyMac, LLC.

“Winner! Macworld 2012 Best of Show, Mac Observer Editors’ Choice 2012. PDFpen, the award-winning desktop PDF editor from Smile is available for your iPad. Don’t wait to get back to your Mac to edit your important PDFs. With PDFpen, use your iPad to sign a contract, make corrections, fill out an application, make comments on a presentation and much more. It’s the mobile app that doesn’t feel like you left the important features back at the office.”

This application allows you to edit and create PDF documents directly on your iPad.

If you are out of the office and receive a PDF document that needs editing then PDFpen can be a vital tool. It will allow you to edit the document on the move, whether that is adding a signature or changing a few lines of text. You can then export the document and send it back to the other person.

PDFpen also allows you create a PDF directly from the application. I would not want to create a whole PDF from the application, but at least you could draft your idea or make a start on a project.

The application offers several options for editing the PDF such as typed text, arrows, shapes, photos. Free hand drawing is also supported, but I would not call it the greatest, you will be tapping the undo button before you get it right.

When I did my signature, I found it worked better if you zoomed in a little. The drawing tool auto rounds the lines and I could not see a way of switching it off, so the signature will not be 100% true.

There is an excellent built in help file that tells you how to use the tools in the application.

Exporting the PDF once complete is easy and has dozens of options, including support for Dropbox, Evernote and Google Docs.

The application user interface is very good in most areas.

On the upside:

  • Nice User interface
  • Easy to add a single change to a PDF, like a signature.
  • General support for other applications.

On the downside:

  • Undoing can leave after images on the document.
  • Copy and Pasting items is not very fun.
  • Sometimes it is hard to move smaller images if they are in the wrong position.
  • I would not like to edit several areas in a large document.

Overall, this is a very good application, but still has too many annoying little issues that are keeping it from being great.  If you are moving around typed text and a signature then this application will do the job well. If you want to add shapes and writing, you may become annoyed rapidly. I am very happy that PDFpen has made it to the iPad, but feel that the application will need an update or two before it shows it true colours.

TASKMASTERHD [TOUCHPAD] – REVIEW (81%)

TaskMasterHD is a task management system released by Rahisi.

“Based upon TaskMaster for webOS phones, TaskMasterHD has been rebuilt from scratch for the Touchpad. Get your life back in order with TaskMasterHD. Now, you can keep a better grip on your GTD lists with TaskMasterHD.”

TaskMasterHD joins the long list of Task management application on the Touchpad, but is it any good?

When you first enter the application you will see three almost blank columns, you can create task lists if you wish to group your tasks, if not, you can have them in a No Tasklist group.

When creating tasks you give it a Summary name, Notes, a due date if you want one and then options such a priority, categories (if you have set these up) and a reminder if you want it.

If you create several new tasks in a row, you will find things like the priority present from the last task you entered.

There are lots of filters to help you view your tasks, by priority, due dates, status etc.

The user interface is excellent. It is simple to add and edit tasks. The application lacks preferences so you are limited to the base colours and fonts, but the defaults are fine.

It has been be pointed out that TaskMasterHD has an excellent Help /Manual built in. Something that a lot of the other task managers lack. The application is easy enough to use without this, but having it there is a bonus and you can confirm that you are doing things right.

On the upside:

  • Well designed user interface.
  • Easy to use and set up task.

On the downside:

  • Lack of repeating tasks.
  • I would have liked to have seen some type of backup option.

Overall, TaskMasterHD is a great task management system, however, for me at least, it lacks the repeating tasks and online backup of data. whole heartedly. If these are not issues for you, then the application is well worth checking out, especially at this price.

SUBNET CIPHER PRO [TOUCHPAD] – REVIEW (75%)

Subnet Cipher Pro is a Network calculator tool and is released by Youngdahl US.

Subnet Cipher Professional is a network calculator tool designed specifically for the TouchPad. Just learning Subnetting? This is a great learning aid, helps visualize whats really happening at the bit layer.”

This networking tool is a bit of a niche application, aimed at people who are interested in networking information and seeing the subnet information from the IP address which can be manually or automatically added.

At the very least, this app can be used to discover your own IP address, but there are other options available that can do this.

The application is very simple to use and will automatically open showing subnet information based on your own IP address.

Once you have discovered the information you are looking for you have several options to output the information including printing, saving the file or emailing. If you are working on several IP address you can look through any recent IP address.

The user interface is clean and easy to use, as long as you understand networking a little.

On the upside:

  • Nice and clean user interface.
  • Useful tool for people learning or using networks.

On the downside:

  • A very niche application.
  • No real preferences in the application, for items viewed or options.

Overall, this is a very good networking app and does what it sets out to do. It is a shame that its market is so niche at the moment. If HP had taken the time to get the Touchpad into the business market place, this may have been a much have application for the IT departments. Hopefully, if the open webOS takes off then this application still has a chance of finding a market.
