OMNIGRAFFLE – REVIEW (82%)

OmniGraffle is a drawing / diagram tool from the Omni Group.

This application allows you to edit and create many different types of diagrams. You can even use as a drawing tool, but it comes into its own when creating mockups and business charts and diagrams (flow charts, organisation charts.)

There are several example files with the application which show what the software is capable of, and some are rather impressive.

Export options including saving as an Image/Photo, send via Email and export of the OmniGraffle file to iDisk, WebDAV and iTunes. There is even support for direct printing via Air Print.

The application user interface is very good in most areas.

On the upside:

  • Nice User Interface
  • Lots of templates available
  • Good export options

On the downside:

  • Fine manipulation of items can be a little tricky at times, such as getting a connection arrow straight.
  • Even with snap to grid etc, you sometimes wish your finger was not in the way of your work.

Overall, this is a great tool for the creation and editing of a charts/diagrams etc. The user interface is very easy to use and allows for both simple and complex work to be produced. I feel there was some improvements that could be made to the fine tuning of a digram, but getting the basic down is very easy. The price is high, but as business app it is acceptable. If you need to create these types of diagrams regularly then OmniFocus is for you.

QUICKOFFICE CONNECT MOBILE SUITE FOR IPAD – REVIEW (85%)

Quickoffice Connect Mobile Suite for iPad is an Office Suite released by Quickoffice, Inc.

This application allows you to edit and create Microsoft Office files be it Word, Excel or Powerpoint. The application can handle several other files as well, but some like PDF are viewable rather than editable. File can be transferred via File Sharing using an http address, via Email, Cloud services like Dropbox or via iTunes.

The word processor side is OK, but lacks a lot of standard features of a word processor. Things like spell checker, word count, tables etc are all missing. I cannot even find a way to center text in the document.

The spreadsheet side is the best of the supported files. It is both easy to use and I have been able to set up a fairly complex spreadsheet without the need of a computer. Do not expect charts etc, but all the basics are covered here.

The power point support is solid, allowing you to create slides with both text and graphics. At present only 2003 is supported, but as the feature has just been added this may change later.

The application user interface is excellent in most areas.

On the upside:

  • Great User interface
  • Solid and easy to use Spreadsheet.
  • Support for most of the newer version of office and other products too.
  • Best support for Power Point in a suite that I have seen.

On the downside:

  • Weak Word Processor, lacking several standard features.

Overall, this is an excellent application for using office documents on the move. It is the best out of the Microsoft Office file editors that we have used to date. It is both a good tool with more user friendly than the others, however, it still has some weaknesses like the basic word processor. If you need an overall application, and only basic word processing then this is the application for you, but if you need an advanced word processor on the move, then you may be better off looking elsewhere.

MURDER AT AVEDON HILL – REVIEW (77%)

Murder at Avedon Hill is a fantasy murder mystery by P.G. Holyfield.

This book tells the tale of the murder of Gretta Platt at the Avedon Manor in Avedon Hill. Arames Kragen arrives with his companion to travel through the pass at Avedon, but find it closed due to the murder and so Arames offers to solve the murder.

On the upside:

  • Nice voice acting and well read
  • Very well written
  • The Avedon Hill setting is really fleshed out making it feel like a real place.

On the downside:

  • A little slow paced at times
  • Lots of characters of importance

Overall, this is a very good book, there are lots of twists and turns as the story progresses. The main characters are likeable and both have histories. The book feels a bit slow moving to start with, but stick with it and you will be rewarded in the end.

Rating: 77%

Average Running Time: 30+ minutes per episode

Price (at time of review): Free
