LITTLE FOX GETS HIS WISH [IOS] – REVIEW (74%)

Little Fox get his Wish is an animated story book released by Green Umbrella.

“Come and dive into the pages of  Little Fox Gets His Wish  and join Little Fox in his journey to find a place without sunlight!”

The story itself tells the tale of a young fox who wants it to stay dark always so he could naughty all night long. So he sets out to find a way to keep the sun from rising.

The main selling point of this application is the interaction that goes with the story, allowing you to move and interact with things on the pages. This can be fun likely firing arrows and shooting water at the sun, only pages it is very lacking. For example when the fox talks to his friend weasel there is no interactionwith the screen than activating a thought bubble.

This story is nice and fun, with the morale of you do not always like what you wished for. Both my children liked the story and liked playing with the pages, but were disappointed at screens that lacked real interaction.

On the upside:

  • A nice little story.
  • Wonderful use of interaction.

On the downside:

  • Some of the pages lack the interaction of others.
  • No iPhone version.
  • White page turn arrow on a white background, is not good UI.

Overall, this is a good little book, which has a nice story and the interaction allows your children to enjoy it more. The interaction is lacking on some screens and not clear on others. If all pages could have had the interaction then the app would have been improved. I feel a few tweaks would improve the app greatly. Worth a look if you are looking for bedtime stories for your children.

THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE SPACE! [IOS] – REVIEW (85%)

There’s No Place Like Space!: All About Our Solar System is an e-book / audio book released by Oceanhouse Media.

“There’s No Place Like Space! kicks off an exciting new series of animated omBooks from The Cat in the Hat’s Learning Library. Children can follow along as the Cat in the Hat takes Sally and Dick on a trip though the solar system, visiting each planet and learning fun facts along the way. .”

The application gives you the options of reading the book yourself or having the pages read to you with you controlling when the page is turned.

In a change from the normal OceanHouse Media titles, this app has a different interface with arrows at the base of the screen to turn the pages rather than the usual swipe. It has the new extra interaction by giving the name of the item you touch on the screen, in writing and audibly if the book is not being read at that moment. You also have the ability of moving some items on the screen, however, the snap back into place when you let them go.

This is covers some of the important facts about space and our Solar system and manages to do it in a way that is not to Scientific or dry. There are some facts thrown in on bold text, but these can be skipped over if you children are not ready for it. My son who is almost eight loved the book and has read it again himself, my daughter who is four, loves the cat in the hat, but it was a little bit too old for her as she fell asleep while the book was being read. That said, I feel the book is aimed at maybe 7-12 year olds.

Adults may even learn something new in the book, like remembering the order of the planets.

I think this redesign in the interface from the standard one works very well and hope that it stays for future OceanHouse books.

On the upside:

  • A fun way for your children to learn about space.
  • Lots to interact with. (Playing and Learning)
  • Great now layout.

On the downside:

  • No page selector to jump into the story to your favorite bit.

Overall, this book is a great way to teach your children about space. It has all the basic facts covered and there is lots for them to play with on screen as they go. Some pages are a lot better than others (more interaction) but generally it manages to keep you entertained all the way through. A great first book in this new learning series, I am looking forward to seeing the next.

TACKY AND THE EMPEROR [IOS] – REVIEW (82%)

Tacky and the Emperor is an e-book / audio book and is published by Oceanhouse Media.

“It’s common knowledge that Tacky was never the best-dressed penguin, but when he and his friends prepare for the arrival of the emperor, Tacky gets carried away and ends up in more than just elegant attire! Tacky brings his own unique brand of humor and entertainment to the emperor’s visit.”

This book gives you the options of reading the book yourself, having the read to you (and you control the page turns) or the complete book read to you automatically. The application also adds extra interaction by touching something on the screen the name appears in print and word is spoken.

The book a tale of a nice, but lazy Penguin Tacky as he helps his friends prepare from the Emporer’s visit, but when a large ballon he is preparing explodes and he lands by the Emporer’s castle things take a strange twist.

This book is good for adults or kids.

On the upside:

  • Interactive with the book adds to the “re-readability” of the book.
  • Universal for iPad and iPhone.
  • Nicely drawn.

On the downside:

  • No page selector to jump into the story to your favorite bit of the book.

Overall, this is an excellent book. This is probably our favorite out of the Tacky stories released by OceanHouse Media to date. If you have not read a Tacky book yet, then this one is well worth a download.

GREEN EGGS AND HAM [TOUCHPAD] – REVIEW (80%)

Green Eggs and Ham by Dr.Seuss is an e-book / audio book released by Oceanhouse Media.

“Would you eat them with a fox?” This timeless Dr. Seuss classic has been delighting readers since 1960. Sam-I-am never gives up trying to convince his friend that green eggs and ham are a tasty treat.”

The application gives you the options of reading the book yourself, having the read to you (and you control the page turns) or the complete book read to you automatically. The application does not just stop at reading the book, they have added extra interaction by giving the name of the item you touch on the screen, in writing and audibly if the book is not being read at that moment.

For those who have not read the book in the past, it follows the story of the lengths that Sam-I-am goes to trying to get his friend to try a bite of Green Eggs and Ham.

This is a great book and much loved. However, the biggest issue with it is if you have no access to WiFi the application will come up with a license issue and will not allow you to read it. Not much good if you have taken the Touchpad in the car with you.

This book is for kids and adults alike.

On the upside:

  • A wonderful book brought into the digital age.
  • Interactive with the book adds to the “re-readability” of the book.

On the downside:

  • No page selector to jump into the story to your favorite bit.
  • Doesn’t work if WiFi is switched off.

Overall, the book was excellent and one of my families favorites. It is another great book from OceanHouse Media, however, the flaw of stopping you reading it if you have WiFi switched off is a major issue for most parents on the move. Hopefully, OceanHouse will fix the WiFi issue very soon.

ALL BY MYSELF – LITTLE CRITTER [TOUCHPAD] – REVIEW (78%)

All by Myself – Little Critter is a audio/ebook released by Oceanhouse Media.

“In this simple, sweet, and very human picture book, Mercer Mayer’s popular Little Critter shows us all the things he can do by himself.”

The application gives you the options of reading the book yourself, having the read to you (and you control the page turns) or the complete book read to you automatically. The application does not just stop at reading the book, they have added extra interaction by giving the name of the item you touch on the screen, in writing and audibly if the book is not being read at that moment.

I am glad that Oceanhouse Media are now releasing some of their excellent range of books on the Touchpad, as they have been a big publisher on the iOS platform.

The books itself is a nice tale of a young boy who tells you all the things he can do all by myself, even if some of them are not quiet true.

There is even a find a mouse game within the book.

On the upside:

  • Interactive with the book adds to the “re-readability” of the book.
  • Nice artwork.

On the downside:

  • No page selector to jump into the story to your favorite bit.

Overall, the book is a good story and very nicely presented. It is really more for younger kids, but it shows off the type of reading experience you get with OceanHouse applications. It is a little on the short side (still over 20 pages), but that has been reflected in the 79p pricing. This is a nice little story book and a lot cheaper than some of the physical books you can buy. Well worth a look if you have not used an Oceanhouse application before.
