DJVU READER HD [TOUCHPAD] – REVIEW (71%)

15 May

Djvu Reader HD is a e-book reader (djuv format only) and is released by harbuz.

“The program designed for read format files djvu. It has an automatic search for files on the device, an intuitive interface and image inversion.”

With a lack of excellent e-readers for the Touchpad in the UK I am always on the look out for a new e-book reader piece of software.

Djvu Reader HD makes itself different by aiming purely at djvu files, a format that is similar to PDF. This immediately makes this application more niche and can limit the amount of books avaialble to you.

There are several websites out there that do offer djvu files, such as http://openlibrary.org/ which has hundreds of out of copyright books in this format. So you can certainly get some classic books, but may be a lot more limited with newer titles.

As with many Touchpad readers getting the file onto the device without a PC or Mac can take a bit of technical know how, but can be done. Helpfully once the file is on the Touchpad the device will pick it up automatically.

Reading is done within a portrait view. Swiping left and right will move you between the pages and there is also bar at the base of the screen to rapidly move through the book.

Hidden at the top of the screen is a touch area that pulls down a menu to take you back to the book menu and gives the option to invert the screen (black background and white text).

Apart from this, the reading experience is basic and really depends on the quality of the scans within the file you have downloaded. The three books I tested the print with readable and all three of the books had clearly been scanned in from a library book.

The user interface is fair, it is no Kindle or iBooks, but has the basics covered.

On the upside:

  • Solid e-reader
  • The only app I have seen for the Touchpad what supports djvu files.

On the downside:

  • The djvu files does limit the choice and places books can be downloaded.

Overall, this is good book reader. It covers the basics and does add the options available for reading on the Touchpad. If you love your classics and the look of older typeface on your books then you will feel at home with this application. For me, I will continue my search for an excellent e-reader for the Touchpad.
