Snake HD is a remake of your classic snake game released by Pulse Apps.

“Snake HD is based on the classic retro snake game. Remade specifically for Touchpad you can now play this classic game in full screen glory! The object of the game is simple: try to beat your high score by making the longest snake.”

This game offers a classic style snake experience.

You control the snake in the game and you need to collect food to grow. There is no time limit on the collection of food so you can slowly build up and practice the controls.

At the start of the game your snake is only one block in size, but will increase by one block every time you eat the food. The grid area is 15 blocks high by 24 blocks wide. With the game only running in landscape.

Things start off slowly as you collect the first pieces of food, but as you do the game begin to slowly increase in speed.

Gameplay wise, the snake in this version of Snake can pass through the sides of the screen and wrap to the other side of the screen (some versions of Snake killed you if hit the wall), so the only real risk to the snake is running into its own body. This means that unless you try to move in a circle you are unlikely to be in danger for a little while at least.

The controls can be done either by swiping on the main play area to change the snake to move in that direction or by the cursor keys in the bottom right hand side of the screen. You can switch between the two methods at any point of the game.

The controls are this games only real weakness in the version from the classic snake game, the controls are good enough, but you are sometimes left feeling that it missed a swipe or tap, or at the very least was late to react. This can of course be deadly at the high speeds later in the game.

The graphics are simple and more retro in style. There is no music, and just a beep when you pick up the food in the game.

On the upside:

  • Fast and fun gameplay.
  • Retro style gaming.

On the downside:

  • Controls are not perfect and can feel a little unresponsive at the higher speeds.
  • The gameplay is a little limited.
  • I would have liked a pause button.

Overall, this is a enjoyable little game. For some it may be a little too simple, but that is really the point of the snake game. If you like your classic style snake game then this one is worth a look, especially if you like the more retro style of the game.
