Paratrooper HD is a tilt controlled dodge game released by Kaboom Apps.
“Parachute your troopers to safety with this new and improved version of Paratrooper HD re-designed exclusively for your new TouchPad! Lean your TouchPad from side to side to adjust your troopers fall, but it’s not quite as easy as it sounds to get a perfect 100 point landing.”
This game puts you in control of a parachute troop. You need to get your team safely to the landing spot and avoiding the various dangers on the level.
The game is split into levels of action. There are 54 levels in all with the first five of thes being the tutorial / introduction of the game. As you progress the levels become hards with the last 15 levels being called “Impossible?”
Gameplay wise, you are shown the level the action will take place. You will be set a challenge for the level, these are normally based on score or the number of surviving men at the end of the level. The plane may also have a limited number of passes.
The game begins, and depending on the challenge you can launch one or more paratroopers from the plane. They will begin to fall towards the ground and you need to open the paracutes for them, luckily this is fairly simple. Then guide them into the landing area.
At the start of the game dangers are limited to trees and lakes, however, as you progress things become more difficult. Special icons will be put onto the screen, these can explode your men or bounce them heavily off course. There are also some that give extra points and can be vital for completing some of the challenges.
At the end of each stage you are shown the high scores, however, if you get a high score you are given an annoying do you wish to submit your score pop up. I would have preferred this as a one time only set up and then change from the preferences if you want to start or stop.
Within the first hour of play I had breezed though 40 of the levels with only then need to reply two of the levels more than once.
Control are done tapping a plane to release the paratroopers, touch the paratroopers to open their paracutes and then tilt the device to make the paratroopers drift in that direction.
The graphics are good with an interesting style that mixes hand drawn with cardboard cut out. The sounds are fairly poor, with no music and are off by default (as it warns it can effect performance of the app!).
On the upside:
- Fun and simple gameplay.
- Nice graphical style
On the downside:
- Early levels have no real challenge.
- Repetitive gameplay.
- Portrait only (but this does give you longer to open the paracutes etc)
Overall, this is a fun little time killer. For me it was a little too easy with the challenges not being too challenging, but for a more casual gamer it is possible that some will be. The game lacks polish in places, but the gameplay which matters most is solid enough. For those looking for some casual gaming action this one is worth a look.
