Picnic Wars HD is a 3D physics puzzle game released by Chillingo Ltd.
“FOOD FIGHT! It’s a battle as old as time, fruit versus vegetable. Take the role of either edible army in this arcade fort destroying game with an appetising twist. Catapult your fruits or veggies into enemy fortresses and crush their defences to a pulp!”
Picnic Wars brings the catapult gameplay of angry birds and similar games in a pseudo 3D world.
Gameplay wise, you have four tracks on the ground to place the catapults on the picnic blanket. In front of the blanket is a building that contains your opponents. You move the catapults forwards and backwards on the blanket, not side to side. Then tap on a vegatable/fruit to load into the catapult and fire. As you smash through the building you squash the opposition within, picking up bonus items on the way (plant food etc)
The game offers 64 levels to play through, however, really there are 32 levels repeated twice as the Fruits or Vegatables.
As the game progresses you gain access to more upgrades to the catapult and different fruits and vegatables to use. The new plants can explode, split etc, doesn’t that sound familiar.
I found the game very easy in general, and had soon plowed through sixteen of the stages, and found myself feeling a real enjoyment or interest in them.
Another downside off the game is long loading screen between each level, especially on the original iPad, this just slows the game down a little too much.
The graphics and sound are good, but the music is very repetitive. The artwork is nicely stylised.
On the upside:
- Interesting gameplay.
- Some well designed puzzles.
On the downside:
- Crashing issues on the original iPad.
- Not Universal.
- A few too many pop ups.
Overall, this is an interesting game. It takes the catapult game design and tries to bring something new. It works in some ways, but fails in others. There is not enough of the game to keep you going long and it fails to really engage you. Do not get me wrong there are some good ideas here, but good ideas do not always make a great game.
