WiFi File Sharing allows you to share files via WiFi and is released by ShiftyAxel.
This application allows you to share your Touchpad over your local WiFi. Unlike WiFi Touchpad File Browser that we reviewed last week, this application takes the route of making your Touchpad sharable and will make it a browsable device in your computers file explorer.
The application has some preferences to how deep you can browse the Touchpad. Whether it is just the public area, the internal directory, you can even open up to the Root level. You can select if you make the areas unbrowsable or to open them up. You can name the device so you can be certain you are browsing the correct device.
Once the preferences are selected, the application does very little, just remains open for sharing. Once you close the application the sharing will close down.
I tried on both Windows 7 and OSX Lion, and the application worked fine with the computers making it easy to move files to and from the device.
This application makes it easy to move lots of files at once, if you are willing to wait a little bit for the transfers. It is certainly easier to use the file management of a computer to look for files rather than using a web page. For example if you have a list of 10 images, on the Mac you can tap space to preview and find the one you want quickly.
The application does need some additional services to be installed before you can use it. These are generally ones form the bigger name homebrew developers so generally give no reason to worry about adding them. However, if you do not like additional installations over the application it is something to consider.
The user interface is basic, but simple to use.
On the upside:
- Very easy to set up for file sharing.
- Preferences to control how much you can browse.
On the downside:
- You will need to know a little about the Touchpad file structure to find something.
Overall, this is a very good file management tool. If you want to move files to and from your Touchpad via WiFi this application makes it easy. It allowed me to copy some holiday photos from my brothers machine onto the Touchpad without having to touch my brothers laptop, he just copied the files himself. Basically, this is simple application which does the job you need it do.
