Little Acorns is a level based platform game released by Chillingo Ltd.

“Guide Mr. Nibbles the acorn hoarding squirrel through a variety of levels in this charming platforming adventure. Collect the acorns scattered around each zone to stock up for winter. Featuring super simple controls, a variety of game mechanics with a cute and lovable look.”

The game puts you in control of Mr. Nibbles, who needs to recover lots of acorns after their house is emptied of acorns by the evil creatures of the land.

The game offers sixty levels to play through (20 levels for a year and 3 years to play) there are more offered in the future. Each year is split into Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. The Winter levels have snow and slippery platform.

Often levels will have a power up hat or two available. These hats can help you jump, destroy enemies or move quicker.

At the end of each year you will face a boss, in the 1st year this is a race rather then a battle, as you race the boss to the exit.

One of the nice things about this game, especially for younger players is that the enemies are not deadly when you hit them, they turn you green and slow you down for about two seconds. The only thing which is deadly in the game is liquid, which will cause the level to end.

As you progress through the game you will unlock new heads, bodies, faces and ropes for Mr. Nibbles so you can do a bit of dress up along the way.

Gameplay wise, you will enter a level and will need to collect all the acorns, once this is done five pieces of fruit will appear which can be collected for bonus acorns. You will jump and swing on ropes as you explore the levels. There are many enemy creatures and pit falls to avoid on the way as you look for the exit door.

The game by a left and right buttons, along with a jump button, making for easy controls.

The graphics and sound are very good, the artwork is stylised and blocky, but looks really good.

On the upside:

  • Cute characters.
  • Fast and Fun platform action.
  • The perfect platformer for casual gamers.

On the downside:

  • The game starts out a little bit too easy.

Overall, this is a fun and cute platform game which I really enjoyed playing. The design of the levels makes it great for casual gamers who have a few minutes to spare. The games starts out a little too easy, but by the end of year 1 the challenge begins to kick in. This application will be staying on my device after the review, which is a rare thing nowaday.
