1001 Ultimate Mahjong is a classic puzzle game released by

The addictive power of Mahjong, multiplied by 1001. Containing 1001 unique Mahjong stacks in one, beautifully crafted package, wrapped together with 8 slick themes, over 40 lovely backgrounds and 5 extraordinary tile sets this is a stunning Mahjong package. Inspired by Mahjong fans from all around the world and their experiences during this century, this is the definitive Mahjong Solitaire experience. You’ll never need another Mahjong game on your device!”

This game offers the player the classic game of Mahjong Solitaire. The game contains over one thousand Mahjong layouts / stacks to select from, however, most are locked until the player gains enough experience to open them. Needless to say with most iOS games now, an in-app purchase can be made to just unlock everything.

The game sets up a board with dozens of tiles are arranged in a special pattern with their faces upwards. A tile is said to be open or exposed if it can be moved either left or right without disturbing other tiles. The goal is to match open pairs of identical tiles and remove them from the board, exposing the tiles under them for play.

The game is finished when all pairs of tiles have been removed from the board or when there are no exposed pairs remaining.

This is really your standard game of Mahjong. You have unlimited time, but there is a clock, as every time you use a hint to help you the clock adds 10 seconds to the clock.

The game is controlled by tapping on the two tiles that you wish to match.

Mahjongg’s graphics are generally good, but the 3D needs a little bit of a tweak, however there is a high useable tile option that helps prevent this. There are lots of backgrounds and themes to play with. The sound in the game is limited to only a few sound effects with no music, but you do have to option to listen to your own music which is a nice inclusion.

On the upside:

  • Pure version of Mahjong (if you do not change the tiles etc).
  • Simple design.
  • Universal.

On the downside:

  • The 3D can be a little confusing at time, but the highlighting option gets round this issue.
  • Lack of “in-game” music, but you can switch your own music on.
  • Slow to unlock new designs, if you are not willing to do the in-app purchase.

Overall, this is Mahjong pure and simple. If you are a Mahjong fan this is well worth a purchase and probably one of the best I have played. There are a few tweaks that clickgamer could do to this one, but generally it is really as good as it can get. They have even released a free version of the application if you are not sure.
