Woody Woodpecker is a slope racing game and is released by Chillingo Ltd.

It’s time for high flying mischief and crazy tricks with your favorite feathered friend! Join Woody Woodpecker and his pals as they race across green valleys and icy slopes. Speed past your opponents and grab first place by timing your touches just right.

It has to be said that this was not the type of game I was expecting at all. This game really is the tiny bird game turned into a level based racing game.

The game puts you in control of Woody Woodpecker, or four other characters from his classic cartoons. You will take part in races through various environments.

There are three areas with ten races in each. As you finish races you will be awards up to three thumbs up, so if you come first you will race, you will get three thumbs up. You will need to finish all races and get twenty thumbs up to move onto the next area.

Each of the characters have a boost and a special weapon. Some of the characters weapons are ineffective and others powerful.

Multiplayer does add a little to the game, it uses WiFi and your game centre account, so you will not be able to play your family on the same account, but you you may find an opponent online (if you are lucky).

The game is controlled by touching the screen to make the character slide down a slope, but you need to release at the right time or you will slowly climb the slopes. The tactic is simple, if there is a big slope down then hold down to gain speed and then release and the character should shot up the up ramp and get some airtime. There are two addition buttons for a weapon and a boost.

The graphics and sound good and true to the Woody Woodpecker cartoon.

On the upside:

  • Interesting racing game.
  • Simple to play.
  • Woody fans will like the characters.

On the downside:

  • Repetitive gameplay.
  • Hitting one danger towards the end of the course can ruin the race completely.
  • Special attack for some characters are next to useless.

Overall, this is a fun little game to play from time to time, but there is nothing that will keep you coming back for more. This really does feel like a tiny bird clone with Woody Woodpeckers added. The muliplayer gives it more legs if you like online gaming, but on the whole I was looking for a bit more from the Woody license.
