Street Wrestler is a pseudo 3D side scrolling beam em up game released by Chillingo Ltd.

Release the Luchador inside of you! Take to the streets and administer your own brand of masked vigilante justice as you punch, kick, throw and slam any witless thug that gets in your way

This game borrows heavily from side scrolling beat ’em ups from the past such as Final Fight and Streets of Rage.

The game has you fighting your way through various areas of a City starting in a junk yard. There are lots of enemies to fight and the backgrounds to the combat are really well done in most areas of the city. You even have levels where you fight on the top of moving lorries.

You can select one of three characters at the start of the game, with another character that is locked. Each character has there own progression through the game so if you reach level 10 with one character you will need to start from level 1 with another.

Strangely with a game like this there is no multiplayer open offer here, it would have been really good to have seen multiplayer via bluetooth or WiFi.

Gameplay wise, the game is not as solid as it could have been. The combat is lack luster and unresponsive. Hitting enemies laying on the ground is overly hard and yet, you can lose your whole health bar as a group of fighters do it to you. You can often miss a punch or picking up a barrel as the 3D shows you next to them, but the engine behind the game has them being waffer thin. Also the switching on buttons from one function to another has you failing in a task as they switch away from that function.

The game is controlled by a virtual joystick for movement and then three combat buttons to jump, punch and grab. These buttons can switch for picking up items etc if near an item.

The sound and graphics are both very good, the characters and backgrounds are nicely drawn. Some of the backgrounds have nice animation.

On the upside:

  • Excellent Graphics.
  • Big game.
  • Some nice humour.

On the downside:

  • Combat is not solid enough.
  • Lack of Multiplayer.
  • Crashing on the iPad 1 (played the game happily and now will not load again even after hard reset.)
  • Buttons cover too much of the action on the smaller screen very of the game (iPod / iPhone)

Overall, despite its flaws I had moments of fun playing this game, but this moments where normally outside of the combat. The one part of the game that should have been perfected seemed left to get the look and feel right. I young son loved the game as was more forgiving of the combat than me, so it may be that children may enjoy this game more, but for those who have played the classic side scrolling beat ’em ups will quickly see that this is not one of them. The combat and the crashing need to be fixed in the next update.
