BreakOut®: Boost is an update of the classic bat and ball arcade game and is released by Atari.
“This arcade classic is now ENHANCED with improved graphics and deeper gameplay features such as power ups (Fire, Acid, Splitting, and Grenade Balls), unique brick types (Exploding, Mystery, x4, and Metal bricks), and Boost Control! The faster your ball goes, the more points you’ll get!”
For people who remember the retro original of Breakout will be very much at home with this application.
The application is free to download, but only gives you five levels to try. You will need to make in-app purchases to unlock additional levels. There are three packs available with an average of 70 levels in each, and they cost 69p each.)
The gameplay is your standard bat and ball game. You need to make sure that you return the bouncing ball with your bat, else if will go off the bottom of the screen and you will lose a life. You need to smash all the blocks on the screen to move onto the next level.
During the game, as blocks smash power up or points will fall down the screen and if you touch them with the bat you will gain the points of the power up. Power ups include things like multi-balls, acid balls that pass through blocks without bouncing back and rockets.
The game is controlled by a control point under the bat and then you drag the bat left and right. This is good as you can still see the bat completely.
The sound and graphics are nice, and are similar to the retro original.
On the upside:
- Fast and Fun gameplay.
- Plays well on the touch screen.
- Lots of levels if you are willing to make the in-app purchases (Well over 200)
On the downside:
- On the iPhone you can sometimes touch the speed bar by mistake trying to save a ball and effect the speed.
- Some levels can be dull at the default speed.
- Too few power ups at times.
Overall, I enjoyed this game, but for some levels I had to up the speed to maximum to get any true excitement from the game. If you like your classic breakout, then you will love this one. However, other games like Block Breaker 3 have a more up to date and exciting feel for those who do not remember the retro original. To be honest I would have preferred if the game has been released for £1.99 and all the levels were built in, but maybe that is just me.
