SONIC CD [IOS] – REVIEW (84%)

23 Dec

Sonic CD is a platform adventure game released by SEGA.

“Sonic arrives only to find the once beautiful world imprisoned beneath a twisted metallic shell. His arch-nemesis, Dr. Eggman, has come for the Time Stones and with them, will soon have the power to control time itself! In order to put an end to Dr. Eggman’s nefarious schemes, Sonic must use the power of Little Planet to travel through time; breaking Dr. Eggman’s hold over the future by destroying his machines in the past and recovering the missing Time Stones!”

The game allows you to play as Sonic (Tails can be unlocked later) as he runs, spins and jumps his way through the levels of the game to defeat Dr. Eggman.

This game has been very carefully converted from the original, with even the Japanese sound track making it into this world wide release (you can still select the U.S. version from the options if you want it.)

From the original cartoon FMV intro that wowed the original audience to the pseudo 3D of the bonus stages, everything has made it into this version and a solid conversion it is too.

Gameplay wise, this version is far more playable than the previous Sonic outings, and does not feel like a touch interface has been slapped on top of the game.

Sonic CD is a fairly big game and will take some time to finish. There are the usual boss battles with Dr. Eggman every few levels and the bonus stages if you collected enough rings during the level.

Helpfully, you can have up to four profiles if all the family wish to play, these allow you to start the game from the stage you left off.

The controls are do with a virtual d-pad and a virtual jump button.

The graphics and sound are excellent, just what you would expect from a Sega title.

On the upside:

  • Fun game play.
  • Great conversion of the original.
  • Universal app.

On the downside:

  • Some stages of the game (pinball sections) can be very annoying.
  • So annoying that you want to throw the device…
  • Wish they could have done such a good job on the previous Sonic titles.

Overall, Sega have been learning how to make better application for iOS and this is another where they have learn and come up with a game that plays much better than the previous Sonics. The only issue I have is Sonic CD is not the best of the Sonic games, with several annoying areas. If you love your Sonic or the original of this title it is well worth the purchase.
