DINK SMALLWOOD HD [TOUCHPAD] – REVIEW (75%)

21 Dec

Dink Smallwood HD is an classic style role playing game released by Robinson Technologies.

“Dink Smallwood HD is the newly remixed version of the classic RPG brought to you by the original creators featuring: Huge RPG featuring around 15 hours of gameplay.”

The game is basically a solo role playing game. It is an overhead view and with a pseudo 3D look. You explore the world finding quests and items to help you become the hero that Dink has always wished to be.

At the start of the game you will wander your village does some tasks, which lead you by the nose until your quest truly begins.

Gameplay wise, you will explorer the world learning new skills (including magic) and improving Dink as you progress.

One of the down sides of the game is Dink starts very weak and he takes a while to improve, this does mean that until you have magic you will need to save regularly as combat will be fatal, especially if you wander too far.

The game is controlled with a virtual joystick and various on screen buttons that control the inventory, searching and combat.

The graphics and sound are both good. It has a good sound track.

I have played this game on both iPad and Mac in the past, so how does this version stand up? Well, on the whole it stands out very well. The user interface needs a little work, but apart from that it plays very well on the Touchpad.

On the upside:

  • Looks like it will be a good game to get into, as your magical abilities increase.
  • There is interaction with other characters that is lacking in similar games.
  • Fun and Wacky ideas and characters.

On the downside:

  • The game is a little basic, such as your fist in the inventory, you need to select it so you can punch.
  • There are better RPGs out there, but not so many on the Touchpad.
  • For a free roaming game it is still quite linear at times.

Overall, this is a good role playing game and has some good ideas. It is a little bit basic at times and the tutorial is a little slow and plodding. Once you find magic the game starts to show what it can really do. If you are looking for an RPG you can get into, then this game could be what you are looking for.
