HUGO RETRO MANIA HD [IPAD] – REVIEW (77%)

20 Dec

Hugo Retro Mania HD is a dodge and collect game released by Krea Medie A/S.

Hugo is on the mission of his life. He is out to find gold, diamonds and rubies whilst battling the evil witch Scylla, the dangerous crocodile Don Croco and huge nasty spiders. With your help Hugo must avoid discarded dynamite, running into errant mine wagons, getting caught by sudden rock falls, and avoid falling into dangerous pits and other surprises.”

I remember this game for Saturday morning TV, where children would phone in and try and play this game using the phone keypad to dodge left and right and to make their choices.

This game puts you in control of Hugo who makes his way through the mines collecting gold and diamonds.

The game is split into two modes. A never ending dodge game and a maze mode, which is the same as the standard game, but you can reach t junctions and cross roads and select the direction you wish to go. At the end of the maze you will find a door. Inside your family is cages and you have four ropes to select from, pull one and if you are lucky your family will be freed and it is on to the next maze.

Gameplay wise, you dodge your way down the tunnels of the mines. There are clear dangers like spiders, holes and dynamite. If you hit any of these you get a nice animated cut scene, that is cute, but gets dull after the tenth time of watching it. Gold and diamonds need to be collected to increase your score. There are other dangers that need avoiding.

You will need to watch the ground for shadows or piled dirt that will you warn you of dangers like falling rocks. You also have to work out that you need to be near the signs for the mine carts otherwise you will be hit by the carts every time.

There is no real progression in the dodge version of the game, and in the maze version your only advancement is unlocking more mazes.

The game is controlled by a left and right buttons and a jump button.

The graphics and sound are both very good, and have the same look and feel of the TV original, with Hugo cute animations and speech.

On the upside:

  • A solid dodge game.
  • Fast gameplay.

On the downside:

  • 3D is not perfect for timing your jumps or seeing things coming.
  • Repetitive gameplay.

Overall, this is a fun game is small doses. This really is not enough here to keep you playing for long. The retro side of the game is great, but I wish more could have been added from the Hugo francise for this one, rather than just the mine run. If you have found memories of the original game then this is worth a look.
