Chess HD is a chess game released by Flash Media.
“Chess HD is great for building concentration, memory, and strategy ability. Unlike many online chess games, this game displays the chess board in three dimensions (3D) rather than as a two-dimensional flat board.”
Gamplay wise, this is your standard Chess game. Select your opponent and pick your colour and away you go. The game plays well and even tracks you moves, so you can see where you went wrong.
The game is clearly a web app, that connects to the connects to a website and offers up the content. This is not a bad things, however, it does mean that the game cannot be played off WiFi and the game also has loading issues for time to time
The bigger disappointment is I have found the chess game on the web and it is free via my computer. However I could not get it to launch on the Touchpad at all, but the Touchpad can load all flash content?
The game offers four levels of difficulty in the single player. There is no multiplayer on offer (this is on the website). Three of the opponents are unlocked, and apparently the Guru level is bugged and will not unlock.
Even the easy opponent “Cody” is fairly good at chess, so novices will find themselves defeated again and again by him.
The game is controlled by tapping to select your piece, and then tapping the square you wish them to move to. The game gives a helpful hint on this turning the possible squares green.
The graphics are very good considering it is a chess game. There is no sound in the app at all.
On the upside:
- Good version of Chess.
- Tough opponents.
On the downside:
- Online Only.
- Sometimes does not even load.
- Free if you have a computer.
Overall, this is a good version of chess, it is well done and generally plays well. However, when it is free on my computer with multiplayer, it just feels like the developer has short cutted an application and made it a paid application. If it could be played offline and offered the same at the website I for one would be happier.
