CHAOS [TOUCHPAD] – REVIEW (73%)

12 Nov

Chaos is a puzzle game released by Ambush Games.

“A jewel bursting, puzzle matching, eye popping adventure! This gem has unlimited levels that will keep you addicted and entertained for months. Be on the lookout for some jaw-dropping and explosive matching during the Diamond Rush bonus!.”

The appears to be storyline to this game at all, just for some reason a robot is dropping coloured items and you need to help move them to match them, so they will disappear. A bit like a “columns” game. However, the screen never fills up quickly, for the first ten levels there will only ever be one full line at the base of the screen when the level begins.

Although the game is shown as being Touchpad only on the HP App Catalog, the instructions talk about phones with keyboards, so it feels like a port from another device.

The game claims endless and unlimited levels, so if this is true the game should keep you going for a long time.

The game is controlled by tapping the side of the screen to move the falling items left and right, you can even slowly lift them once landed. The robot at the top who drops the objects can be tapped to drop again.

My main issue with the game is that there is no feeling especially in the early levels of any chance of failing at the game. You seem to complete the levels without even trying, I tested this by leaving the game untouched, and it first a level and I rapidly tapped the robot to drop more items, and I completed the level. This may just be for the early levels, but there was no feeling of challenge.

The graphics and sound are nice, but nothing special.

On the upside:

  • Interesting twist on the match 3 game.

On the downside:

  • The first twenty levels are easy and dull.
  • Very repetitive gameplay.

Overall, this is a strange little puzzle game, I played it for about twenty five levels before it really started to become interesting and even then was still not a hugely challenging puzzle game. It does improve over time as the game progresses, but as a gamer do I really want to wait that long. The game is not bad to play or in design, I just wish you could skip the first hour of gameplay (start at level 20, 30 or 40). If you like you match 3 games, or find them too fast, then Chaos is worth a look. For most, I feel boredom will set in first and you will give up long before the game gets interesting.
