ReadOnTouch Pro is a ReaditLater client released by Sven Ziegler.

NB: You need to a account in order to use this application.

When you open the app you will be asked for a ReadItLater account (which is free) in order to import your stored articles.

Once this has been entered the application will start to sync with ReadItLater and within a few seconds (depending on the number of articles you have stored) will be pulled down the articles and you will be read to browse them.

ReadOnTouch had a two column layout with the left hand side offering the article names, and the right showing the articles selected. You can expand the right column to full screen, but often this is not needed due to the text only format.

There is a bottom toolbar that has icons for switching between the article and the web version, themes, export options and marking the article as read (a tick).

The application can be used offline and online, as it does not try and Sync if WiFi is off, so if you downloaded some articles before going on a journey, then you can have several articles to read on the move.

The one issue I found with the application was I had the touchpad slow down as I clicked tick on one article, and I ended up clicking two articles as read. When I went to return the article as un-read I could not, and when the app synced again the article disappeared from the reading lists (this bug will be fixed in v1.0.2).

Preferences can be used to modify themes and font sizes.

Articles can be added by entering the URL direct into the application, using the export option in the Advanced Browser application or you can modify your standard Touchpad browser with a patch in PreWare.

The user interface is excellent. The application is easy to use and generally displays of the articles is clean and well formatted manner.

On the upside:

  • Excellent User Interface.
  • Can you be used Offline to read already downloaded articles.
  • Several theme options for font and colours to read in.
  • No ongoing subscription fees to use the ReadItLater API (unlike Instapaper at $1 a month).

On the downside:

  • No way changing an article back to unread, if you click the tick by mistake.
  • A bit more limited than Instapaper apps, due to the ReadItLater APIs.
  • Somethings lock with the downloading article pop up when downloading when adding from Advanced Browser, forcing you to quit the application. When you reopen the article is there.

Overall, this is a great application, especially if you are already a ReadItLater user. If you have the “Advanced Browser” application this is a great companion product to have. If you do not own Advance Browser (or patched your Browse via PreWare) then the application can be a bit less useful as getting links into the applications takes a little longer, however, as a reader itself does a good job.
