POKER PALS HD [IPAD] – REVIEW (75%)

06 Nov

Poker Pals HD is a combination of poker and scrabble game released by Chillingo Ltd.

“It’s poker redefined… Poker faces at the ready for the next big thing in iOS poker. Poker Pals is an innovative, smart, fun and challenging game that will have die-hard players and newcomers alike dying to give it a shot!”

After installing there is a tutorial that shows how the game is player, however, this does not explain everything. (You can go back and view the tutorial at any time.)

Gameplay wise, you are given a scrabble style grid of 7 x 7 squares. There are three cards automatically placed in the middle of the grid, and four jokers / wild cards on the board (one is even corner). You need to place up to five cards in order to create the best poker hand you can. The single player mode always sees you taking the first move.

You will need a bit of poker knowledge to play this to know the hands available, but you really do not need to know much more than that.

The single player mode allows you to play against AI opponents over various skill levels (easy, medium and difficult).

Online Multiplayer gaming is available via Game Center and Pass and Play.

The graphics and sound at more functional, than anything special.

On the upside:

  • Interesting mix of poker and scrabble.
  • Multiplayer is good, as long as your both life the game.

On the downside:

  • Not Universal, iPhone version needs to be purchased seperately.
  • Game pushes for crystal and notifications to be switched on.

Overall, to be honest this game did not appeal to me. I played it several times, but found it difficult to win due to luck and bad tactics on my part. I think this will appeal to a very niche audience. There is a free version of the game available for down, so I would recommend downloading that first to see if it is a game you will like, before purchasing the application.
