Steambirds Survival HD is a turn-based combat strategy game released by Spry Fox, LLC.
“In the Steambirds universe, the Allies are losing the war against the Axis powers and their incredible Armada. As an elite Allied pilot, your goal is to stand your ground against endless waves of Axis aircraft. The odds are overwhelming. You’re hopelessly outnumbered. The United Kingdom is almost certainly doomed, but you *might* be able to save its citizens…. if you can hold off death long enough for them to evacuate!”
Steambirds Survival HD, the sequel to the hit game Steambirds (first released in 2010).
The game puts you in command of planes defending various UK cities in this alternative version of the war.
The game offers fifteen cities to defend, each one having 8 missions to complete to get all the stars for that City. To start the game the City of Aberdeen is open and the others need to be unlocked with Copper (Coins) that are found and earnt during the game.
Each mission will have you deployed in an area over the city, and the mission objectives will be along the lines of shooting down several planes or surviving a set number of waves.
You can also use the coins to recruit allies (more planes that you can control) to assist in the battle. This becomes vital as the game progresses and the odds become overwhelming.
Suprisingly, the game does not offer any form of Multiplayer at this time.
The game is controlled by moving around an arrow in front of the plane, showing speed and movement, and then tapping on the air to pull up any power ups your plane has collected. You then press end turn and your planes will move as you defined.
The graphics and sound are good, but nothing amazing.
On the upside:
- Well designed strategy game.
- Lots of Cities to unlock.
- Some interesting power-up.
On the downside:
- Not always clear what damage you are taking.
- Waves will just teleport into the middle of the map sometimes, making strategy difficult.
- Not much variety in the missions.
Overall, this is an enjoyable little strategy game. It is similar to many other games of this type. If you like this style of strategy it is well worth a look, especially as it is Free to download.
