Portal of Praveus is a Quake/Hexen style first person shooter released by Studio 3D.
“Portal of Praveus is a fantasy and adventure first person shooter featuring single player and multiplayer game modes, as well as four character classes to choose from, each with different abilities. These included the offensive Paladin, the defensive Crusader, the spell-casting Necromancer, the stealthy Assassin, and the powerful Demoness.”
Portal of Praveus offers a singe player mode or a multiplayer mode, but a lack of players and poor controls means that Single Player is your best option.
The game is played over four areas that can be selected as starting points (Catacombs, Tulku, False Temple and the Town.)
The application appears to be running a linex emulator with the Touchpad controls and interface shoe horned on top.
The graphics and sound are generally very good, however, the game is dark, so you will need to bring your brightness up to maximum to see some of the areas.
My biggest complain about the game are the controls. It feels like the developers do not own a Touchpad and have only played their game on a PC emulator with Keyboard and Mouse. If they had played on the Touchpad they never would have released the game in its current state. Sometimes turning 180 degress to look behind you takes 2 seconds, which is unforgivable in a FPS game.
On the upside:
- Nice graphics
- Multiplayer options are available.
On the downside:
- The Controls are terrible. Looking is slow and in-effective, it can take 2 seconds to turn 180 degrees which is fatal in an FPS.
- Help file refers to Demon King, another game by the same company.
- Crashed out on me.
Overall, this is a reasonable old school style first person shooter under it all and fans of Hexen and Quake may find something to like here. However, for me, until the controls are sorted out in one way or another, the game is fatally flawed and cannot be recommended. Hopefully a future update will fix it.
