Robotek is a strategy game released by Hexage.

The game puts you in the role of a lone human in control of the Victoria Node, the last human control node in the world after the robot uprising. The Empire of Machines is trying to end human life and you need to use you node and control over a limited amount to machines to recapture nodes from the Empire of Machines.

The basics of the game has you playing out a campaign, you need to select a node and then enter a battle with the AI that controls that node. You will basically select one of the attacking modes (robots, powers or warfare). Then you start a slot machine style wheel spinning to get your outcome. The first wheel spins slowly, so easy to select the first outcome, but the last two are random.

Depending on the outcome the scene is played out with the robots summoned, attacks made or shields up up.

As the game progresses you will be able to purchase power ups and experience which will increase your health and other abilities.

The campaign is big with a full world map with around one hundred nodes to try and take over.

The game is controlled by selecting a form of attack and then pressing the arrow to spin the wheel and again to make your first selection.

The graphics and sound are interesting with nice “retro” stylished graphics.

I have now played Robotek on iOS, Touchpad and now Mac. So the game really does not need touch controls it works well on the Mac. Unlike the other two versions Free games are a little harder to come by on the Mac platform.

On the upside:

  • Stylished graphics.
  • Well designed strategy game.
  • Massive campaign to try and complete.

On the downside:

  • Lack of real control over your troops.
  • The game is a little too random at times, with battles turned with good / bad luck.
  • Repetitive game play.

Overall, I have played this game for several hours now, and I have to admit when I first loaded it I was not so keen on the game, I felt it was too random and I did not like the lack of control. However, as I contined to play I began to enjoy the game and started to come up strategies to contend with most outcomes. Somes you will lose a battle by seer bad luck (the bad guy getting three attacks in a row, by some lucky spins) but this does not happen too often.
