FlipShip is a tilt controlled cross between Geometry Wars & Tilt to Live released by ByteSize Games.
The basic idea of FlipShip is to fly your spaceship around in an area of space (limited to the size of the screen) and to fight off the enemy ships that enter the area. Enemies come in two colours and you are able to flip your ship by tapping the screen between these two colours. If you ship matches the enemy your ship will automatic fire at the enemy (when you are facing them), if you are the wrong colour your ship will do nothing.
To gain points and combos in the game you need to switch between the colours carefully in order to achieve the highest scores.
Power ups will randomly appear on the map, these can be anything from shields, bombs and super speeds (these fire off automatically when touched). Sometimes you will pick up a special power that can be triggered by press the onscreen button.
Gameplay wise, you will find yourself dodging the one colour while shooting the other trying to reach the floating power ups that will help clear the enemy and continue your game. You will even find yourself trying to group enemies for a powerup usage or to flap the screen and opening up your lasers.
The game is controlled by tilting the device to move around the play area. Tap on the screen to change your colour. You also have a special power button on the corner of the screen.
The graphics and sound have a nice retro look (vetro style graphics).
On the upside:
- Tilt Controls work surprising well (with Calibration)
- Fast and Fun gameplay.
- Lots of difficulty levels to select from.
On the downside:
- Longevity looks like it will be an issue.
- Not Universal (yet)
Overall, this is a good tilt controlled game (so may other games fail to get the tilt controls right) it is fun to play in small doses. However, like the types of games it is based on the gameplay gets out after a while. For £0.69 and the promise of becaming a Universal application it is well worth checking out.
