Splashtop Remote Desktop HD is a tool to access your Mac / PC on the move and is released by Splashtop Inc.

You will need to have the Splashtop Streamer software installed on your Mac or PC in order to use this application, this a free download from their website.

Once you have the software installed on both Touchpad and computer it is a fairly simple task to get them connected. I had a few minor issues, but this was due to having some older Splashtop software from the iPad version of the application. I tested on the Mac and PC, but reviewed using the Mac version.

I personally run my Mac at 1680 x 1050, so it is a little small on the Touchpad screen, so I let the app resize the screen to Touchpad native size of 1024 x 768 which worked well and gave enough screen size to still be able to use the applications without issue.

During testing I used a number of applications all the ones I tested worked and only iTunes playing some videos full screen gave issues with the video window becoming a grey boxed grid instead of the video playback.

Over the WiFi connection was speedy and worked well, over the web things were slower, but still reasonable.

My main issue was with sound on the application, it was never consistant and often I would get feedback from the Mac internal mic to the Touchpad. However, most of the application you will be using remotely will not really be using sound anyway.

The controls take a little getting use to with the swipes and with multiple fingers, but once learnt you can navigate the computer quiet well.

The usefulness of the application really depends on what you want to use it for. If you are looking to watch movies or action 3D games then you may be a little disappointed. However, if you are looking to connect to your machine and just use some software that is not available on the Touchpad, look at a website not supported by the Touchpad browser or use support the user of the computer remotely then this is great.

On the upside:

  • Fairly easy to set up.
  • Great for accessing your computer on the move.
  • Frame rate is good enough to watch low def movies and play low frame rate games.

On the downside:

  • The Mac Desktop Streamer application is a little buggy. Works OK, but did crash on me when setting up the Network options.
  • Sound does not work well at times.

Overall, this is a great remote desktop application. It generally works very well and if you are away from your main machine can be massively useful. It has a few bugs and issues, but still manages to do a good job. I can only hope that this service will improve over time.
