GOATUP [IOS] – REVIEW (83%)

14 Sep

Goatup is an arcade platform game released by Llamasoft.

“Your goal is to raise a family – as high as you can! Kiss billy goats and eat grass to get kids. Keep jumping to lead your flock as high as you can.”

The game itself feels a lot like nebulous another retro classic where you would rotate around a tower and jumping hole and climbing your way up to the top of the tower using the platform.

GoatUp is more fast action that nebulous, with the tower being never ending but going up through zones, from grass land to levels such as manic miner (a zx spectrum classic) where the platforms slowly fall away when stepped on.

On the platforms you will be able to collect items that appear when you eat the grass or colour in the blocks for extra points and you need to collect other goats and avoid enemies unless you are powered up.

If you fall off the bottom of the screen it is goat (game) over, and you need to start your climb again.

The game can either be control by the touch screen or tilting the device. I found the touch controls worked best for me.

The graphics and sound are very retro indeed, going back to the very early days of colour. If you are a fan of Jeff minters game then you know what to expect.

On the upside:

  • Fast and fun platform game.
  • Retro heaven, including references to classic games like manic miner.
  • Universal.

On the downside:

  • A little bit too much going on at one time, when you get to later levels.
  • No options other than controls, I would have liked to move onto towards some of the later levels, or change the difficulty.
  • The game can only be played in portrait mode, but understandable due to the tower design.

Overall, this is another great retro remake by Jeff Minter, it work well and is fun to play. This is probably the best iOS game from Llamasoft to date, and really takes me back to my youth. This is also a much more mainstream game being the first that my son has liked for the Llamasoft collection.
