LOTR: MIDDLE-EARTH DEFENSE [TOUCHPAD] – REVIEW (76%)

12 Sep

LOTR (The Lord of the Rings): Middle-earth Defense is a tower defence game released by Glu.

The application puts you in control of the heroes of the lord of the rings movie. This tower defence game has the heroes as the “moving” towers, with wargs, orcs and ogres moving through the map. You must stop too many getting to the exit, else it is game over.

As you kill the creatures you gain gold and materials. The characters can be purchased and upgraded for gold, and material can be used for setting traps.

The campaign follows the lord of the rings story loosely, with areas like weather top and the mines of moria.

You have three levels of difficulty (easy, normal and hard) so you have some control over how hard the game will be. However, even with this you need to make sure you use your money wisely and place the heroes well as the game is very unforgiving of mistakes. Always have Aragorn or Gandalf in use when available.

Controls are you tower defense standard with you dragging and dropping characters and traps, then clicking on them to upgrade etc. You also have a special power that you can trigger by a button at the side of the screen when that character is highlighted. The game can be paused at any time and you can select to play the game as double speed through the duller early levels.

The game is very similar to its iOS counterpart, with similar options and graphics.

The graphics and sound are both good, and will make fans of the film happy. Whoever, some of the in-game graphics lack a little in animation.

On the upside:

  • Well designed tower defence game.
  • Characters have the same likeness as the movie.
  • Several game modes available.

On the downside:

  • Licence could have been used for so much more
  • Very repetitive.
  • Some levels are overly long.
  • Overpriced when compared with its IOS counterpart.

Overall, this is a solid tower defence game. If it was not a Lord of the Rings game then it would more than likely be of no great interest. But, with the movie tie-in, it becomes a bit more interesting. Fans of the movies may find something of interest here, especially if you are a tower defence fan.
