Radiant HD is a retro style space shooter released by Hexage.
“Take your stand against the alien horde in a pure arcade/action space shooter. Cut through hundreds of creeps to face giant monsters in unique bossfights. Collect special weapons and power-ups, upgrade your ship and save your homeworld!”
Radiant HD is a retro style shooter much in the mode of Galaga with wave after wave of enemy attacks with the aliens sweeping onto the screen, then moving into position at the top of the screen. Then a few launching down the screen at you while they continue to fire.
The enemies will drop the odd power up, shield or extra life when killed, mainly they will drop cash that can be used later to upgrade.
The game mixes things up with the odd level that is different like Asteroid field and Boss battles.
As you progress through the game with get the occassional time out where you can buy weapons, shields and extra lives. However, this screen seems to have been an after thought and bugged. With prices not showing correctly, seeming to be able to buy things that you cannot afford, and not able to buy things that you can afford.
Gameplay wise, the game plays smoothly but Casual level lacks any challenge, Hardcore which is the toughest version I would have to call Normal mode in other shooters.
The game is controlled by pressing the left and right of the screen to move in that direction, the ship auto fires. You can tap the ship once to select weapons, and twice to pause the game.
The graphics and sound are both retro style, so nothing outstanding, but functional.
On the upside:
- A fun shooter.
- Lots of power ups.
- Some nice boss battles (if a little far apart)
On the downside:
- Lots of menu bugs (in game works OK.)
- Casual mode is dull and unchallenging (I completed 8 levels while drinking a cup of coffee without losing a life.)
- In-Game Shop does not work properly for purchasing upgrades.
- Very repetitive gameplay.
- Would have really liked some control over the shooting, rather than it being automatic.
Overall, this is a good shooter, but far to easy on Casual and still not tricky enough on Hardcore. The bugs, especially the issue with the upgrade shop hurt the game as well. With a few tweaks it could be a great retro style shooter, at the moment it is just good. I look forward to want an update may bring.
