MacFamilyTree is a genealogy application released by Synium Software GmbH.

Before I start, we reviewed the IOS companion to this application called “MobileFamilyTree Pro” it is worth checking out this review if you have an iPhone or iPad.

This application is designed specifically to create and edit family trees. It also has a lot of reporting and charting capabilities once done.

When you finish open the application you will be presented with a blank family tree page. Start to create your find person, and then you are underway. I found it a little tricky to get the started, once the first person was in place things became a lot easier being able to click on that person then adding details, parters, parents and children.

The application gives you dozens of options to add details on the people. Special dates, Notes and Facts.

Sometimes there feels like too many places to enter data, and sometimes it can almost be confusing where to enter a date, for example marriage. You cannot enter it in the special dates of the person, but have to do in the connection between the two partners in the wedding.

You can even add photos that are available from the family tree view and also in a special media section. This works well with the camera roll / photo library if you have pictures on the device.

There are other options like adding sources of information on a piece of data, locations for mapping out where people lived and events that happened in that area. There is even a built in To-Do list for making notes of the next steps in your search.

There is even a quiz that asks you questions on your family, its usefulness depends on your interest and the amount of data you have collected.

This application has some options that is not in the mobile application, such as data maintenance and improved search options.

This user interface is well designed and easy to use, once you have learned the options available.

To be very honest I think for ease of use the iPad version has a small edge over the Mac version.

On the upside:

  • Well designed user interface.
  • Easy to add people and the smallest detail about them.
  • Excellent options for Charts and Reports, that really impress.
  • Good support for importing media to family tree.

On the downside:

  • SYNC to MobileFamilyTree Pro was not as easy as I would have hoped.
  • UI can be a little confusing to new users.

Overall, this is an excellent application. It is a great way to create your family tree. If you have a laptop then this is a must have application if you have any interest in geneogy. If you have an iPad and an iMac then the mobile application needs to be considered, and whether you will buy the mobile version exclusively or buy both.
