Monty and the Mugwumps – The Mugwumpian Lair is a puzzle game released by Jatzan.

“Monty woke up this morning to receive the shock of his life! All his Little Montys, his pride and joy, were missing. Now he knew that Little Montys would not normally, and could not stray too far as their baby brains were not yet properly developed. There was only one explanation. The Mugwumps had kidnapped them! Every single one of them!”

Once you have selected a level to play Monty will appear in the play area, containing walls, monsters and other dangers. There are also coins and one of his little montys in a cage. Monty needs to navigate his way around the level, collecting the coins to unlock the level and collecting the little monty.

If Monty or the little monty hit an enemy or one of the other dangers it is game over and you need to play the level again.

The game offers 80 levels in all, which will take a fair while to complete.

The game is controlled by dragging the path that you wish Monty to follow, release and Monty will follow this path. Tap him on screen and he will jump.

The graphics and sound are both reasonable, the menus lack polish and their is very little animation on the characters.

On the upside:

  • Some well designed puzzles.
  • Universal.

On the downside:

  • Why have a jump, if you cannot jump the enemies, only background dangers?
  • A retry level button would have been nice rather than selecting from the menu again.
  • Menu system needs work and some more polish, scrolling the menus is not a pleasing experience.

Overall, this game has a solid enough, but the menus that surround it give it a half finished feel. I think will some more work to the menu system and a minor tweak to the gameplay this could be a good puzzle game. There are lots of levels and gameplay to be had here.
