Jetpack Joyride is a shoot and dodge game released by Halfbrick Studios.
“Join Barry as he breaks in to a secret laboratory to commandeer the experimental jetpacks from the clutches of science evildoers.”
This game borrows heavily from Barry Steakfries previous game, Monster Dash. In fact, it takes a moment from that game when you temporary obtain the machinegum jetpack.
Basically, Halfbrick have taken this idea, tweaked it, improved it and made a complete game out of it, and simple as it was they have made one of the most fun and addictive games I have played to date.
The game is controlled by simply tapping the screen, tap to jump (move up into the air) and tapping to say there and letting go for Barry to fail downwards.
As you dodge your way past lasers, missiles and electrical beams you can pick up upgrades to help you in the game. If you hit one of the obstacles without an upgrade then it is game over.
The upgrades give you a special ability such as teleport, change gravity etc. The upgrades give a nod towards other famous iOS games like Tiny wings and Gravity guy.
The game has dozens of in-game missions / achievements to complete, to add to the interest.
There is also a coin system in the game, which can be used to buy costumes and jetpacks (that really just change the look and feel) and Vehicle upgrades / Utilities that change the game a little, if just a single use in the case of utilities.)
You can buy additional coins via in-app purchases, but you are unlikely to need to do this unless you really want to unlock things quickly.
The graphics and sound are both good, but nothing outstanding, if you liked Monster Dash expect more of the same.
On the upside:
- Fast and furious gameplay.
- Universal Application
- Lots of do.
On the downside:
- Repetitive gameplay
Overall, this is an excellent game for the casual game, and even a hard core gamer will enjoy this one for a while. The missions and unlocks will keep you going for some time as well as the addictive gameplay. I can see this game staying on my device for quite some time to come. Halfbrick have made another great game at a great price.
