QUARREL DELUXE [IOS] – REVIEW (89%)

26 Aug

Quarrel Deluxe is a combination of word and strategy game released by Indiagames Limited.

The developer claim that “QUARREL is the most novel word game ever made. But don’t just take our word for it – grab it now and enter a universe where WORDS (11 points) literally speak louder than ACTIONS (8 points).” and I am inclined to agrees.

The rules to the game are a little complex to explain, I will do my best below, but your will be glad to know there is a great tutorial that takes you through it all, simply and clearly.

The game itself is a strange mix of strategy, scrabble and anograms. The game has you on a board, you are given a number of areas on that board. You attack the other players using the word game side of the game and then you use your strategy skills to capture areas and move around troops (and re-enforcements.)

The word game plays out between the two players fighting over an area. They are given 8 letters to select from, all of these are anagrams of a 8 letter word. You will be able to play a number of letters equal to the “characters” you attacked/defended with. If you had three “characters” then your longest word can only be three letters long.

The letters are given values like 12 for a Z and 1 for an E. So even if the opposition has a five letter word, you will be able to win with only 3 letters if the value is higher. If there is a draw, then the fastest to create the word wins.

The game offers 4 ways to play:

  • Quick Match – A completely random game (probably not the best for newbie players)
  • Make Match – Create your own custom game – select the location (number of players), players and timer (on or off).
  • Domination – Campaign. A set games against some pretty tough opponents.
  • Daily Challenge – A daily game that all players can compare themselves with.

Gameplay wise, the game is turn based with each player taking turns to attack and then move forces. The game allows you to play along with the word games while two computer opponents are playing with stops the wait for your next move from being boring.

As you progress in the game you will be giving a World IQ.

The graphics and sound at both good. With the strange “characters” on your team being cute.

On the upside:

  • Interesting mix of word play and strategy.
  • Fun to play
  • Educational (in some ways)

On the downside:

  • Lack of multiplayer (online particularly).
  • Would have liked to have been able to create additional profiles (but I understand it is linked to game center)

Overall, I really liked playing this game. When I was first offered it for review I was very unsure for the description, but by the time I had finished the tutorial I was hooked. The games can be a little long for the more casual gamers, but as long as you are reasonable at spelling then this game is well worth picking up.
