Speedway GP 2011 is an official Speedway GP racing game release by Vivid Games.

Race around 11 different real-life stadiums as you step into the intrepid boots of 15 actual speedway superstars in the most daring, dangerous and dynamic motorcycle racing game on the App Store.

The game opens to some nice FMV of Speedway racing.

The game offers a single player mode consisting of a quick race or a championship. As you progress through the game you will unlock tracks. The championship has only difficulty levels (easy and hard)

The game itself although solid, does not feel like true racing at times. You are steering the bike, but doing nothing else. Other racers seem to win or lose races around you no matter what actions you take.

The game lacks a multiplayer option, which is a shame for a game of this nature.

The games is controlled either by tilt controls or holding the left and the right of the screen to turn. You tap the screen to start the race and you swipe into the turn to increase your turn (drift).

The game has in-app purchase for an engine boost (to help win races) and fast track (to unlock all tracks) both are available for 69p.

The graphics and sound are generally very good, giving a feeling of mud and speed.

My biggest issue with the game was the lack of control in the race. Some races you win with ease, sticking the best you can to the racing line. Then you use the same tactics in the next race and all the other racers zoom past you and you are left in the mud. As you have no control over acceleration and braking you feel that this is unfair if you have not steered wrongly.

On the upside:

  • Nice use of the Speedway GP license with tracks and riders.
  • Universal.

On the downside:

  • Like Nascar, Speedway tracks can be seen as repetitive left or right turns.
  • Feeling of not actively being in the race.

Overall, this is a solid racing game, however, Speedway is a bit of a niche racing game. For none fans they will find the lack of interaction and oval tracks lacking interest. Fans of the sport are likely to be more impressed and happy to race as their favorite riders. If you are a fan of speedway than check it out, if not, there is nothing here to draw you in.
