Spacelings is a cute puzzle game released by HotGen Ltd.

After returning home from a deep space mission of exploration, the captain of the scout ship Liberator finds his peace loving homeworld attacked and the entire Spaceling population abducted by the mysterious mechanical Roborgs! Piloting your ship and armed solely with a tractor beam, it falls to you to scour the galaxy and save your helpless Spaceling brothers and sisters from an uncertain fate… Free them all, by any means necessary!

This game is simple in design. You are presented with a puzzle, made up of a several Spaceling floating inside an area. You appear in your spaceship and the tractor beam fires into life. You need to pull the Spacelings into the ship by deflecting the beam to reach them.

However, this is not so easy, as you can only deflect the beam a limited number of times, and things like mines, lasers and bombs make getting your Spacelings out even more difficult.

Each level gives rewards up to four stars for completing it, these are awarded for all the Spacelings being saved, Time taken, Pods collected etc.

The game is claims to have over one hundred levels to play through, and this should take some time to complete the game with all the stars. However, each level takes less than a minute to play and levels can be completed by collecting only one Spaceling. So it will be possible to finish all the levels fairly quickly if you are not looking to get a perfect score.

The game is control by touching the beam to change its speed, swiping by the beam to change its direction (add a deflector) and then you can move around the screen by dragging.

The graphics and sound are both good, the graphics of the Spacelings are extremely cute.

On the upside:

  • Cute game.
  • Some nicely designed puzzles.
  • Tests both mind and reflexes.

On the downside:

  • Tricky to control at times, as you trigger the screen to scroll rather than speeding up the beam etc.
  • More for the casual gamer, as many levels have little challenge.
  • Sometimes Timing plays too much of a part to completing a puzzle. Making it annoying.

Overall, this is an enjoyable little game, it is very much for the casual gamer. The game can be finished within a few hours (not with all the stars). At the price it is a good value puzzle option. If you are a casual gamer who likes mind and reflex puzzles then it is well worth a download.
