Pollen Count HD is a cute “traffic control” game released by Chillingo Ltd.
The first thing I thought when I played Pollen Count was… “Oh, this is just another traffic control game with bees.” However, after playing for a while I found that Pollen Count was a little more than that.
This game is simple in design. You need to guide the worker bees that enter the screen to first go to the flowers and then navigate them to the bee hive. As the game progresses more and more bees appear and speeds become fast. Pollen Cut mixes things up a little by having different types of bees, spiders who enter the mix and steal pollen from your bees and fast moving bees.
The game is currently has twenty fours levels to play through (there is an in-app purchase to unlock all the levels at one.)
Each of the levels have a nice animated background, and you need to navigate a set amount of bees safely to the hive with pollen in order to unlock the level. You have the option to continue after the unlock to try and get a high score for the level.
There is a multiplayer mode that is a local game for two players to play on the same device. This is configurable, but as a versus mode is wide open for cheating (making you opponents bees crash into each other.)
There are also two mini games to unlock, a zom-bee game and a 999 mph mode.
The game is controlled by touching a bee and drawing a line for the flight path you wish them to take.
The graphics and sound are both good. The animated backgrounds really stands out from the more functional graphics of the bees.
On the upside:
- Very good “traffic control” game.
- Fast and furious gameplay in later levels.
On the downside:
- Had some issues with crashing at the end of levels, until I rebooted the iPad 1. Memory Hungry.
- Not universal – iPhone version has to be purchased seperately.
Overall, this is an enjoyable little game. I find the traffic control games a bit of a niche market, which people love or hate. I found the extras that Pollen Counts makes raises it towards the top of the those on offer and it the multiplayer and extra mini games is probably a must have for fans of this style of game.
