Typewriter Beta is a markdown authoring tool and released by Obsessive Media.
First off this is a BETA application, so will not be the final product, however as it is very stable and free we have decided to cover it.
This application is designed specifically to write markdown documents and for this it is excellent. For those who do not know, Markdown is a way of writing a plain text document and then by adding hash mark and stars etc, you can format it into html with a simple conversion. Markdown remains readable outside the editor, so can be read and edited easily without the next to learn the more complex html.
You can type up your markdown document, and then use the special swipe bar to drag over the markdown text and show the HTML version.
Typewriter can be linked into Dropbox to store and edit your files in the cloud as well as locally.
The application offers help with links to HTML pages with markdown syntax and a useful FAQ.
Export options are fair, being able to export as markdown sourcecode (.md) out via Email or in conjunction with Dropbox.
This user interface is well designed and easy to use. The bar swiping to change between views is a little wacky, but is interesting and works well if you have the small formats of text.
On the upside:
- Well designed user interface.
- Great way of creating markdown
- Dropbox support.
On the downside:
- Not many export options. (would have liked to export to HTML directly)
- No built in help / shortcut keys – so you need to know markdown well to get the best results.
Overall, this is a very good markdown authoring tool. It may be BETA, but it works well and has the functionally of a finished application. If you want a markdown tool for the Touchpad then this is well worth a download.
