Shrek Kart HD is a karting game released by Gameloft.

Shrek Kart HD is Gamelofts first Touchpad game, and it amazed me the other day when it was shown on the US version of a Touchpad application what seemed like hundreds of Touchpad owners on the forums that did not realise it was in the HP app catalog.

The basic idea of the game, are the started karting game to drive around the track and try to finish first against the seven other characters. You can pick up special boxes on the way, that allow you to release attacks against you opponents or protect yourself. Shrek is a little different for the norm, with a character having a unique special power that can be used without it going away, but it will take time to recharge.

The game allows you to select between lots of your Shrek favorites, however, at the start of the game several of these are locked, so only Shrek, Donkey, Puss in Boots and Gingy.

There are several game modes, these include:

  • Single Race – A quick race, against eight opponents.
  • Tournament – Multiple races that will you to unlock the other characters over time.
  • Arena – Battle with the other characters.
  • Challenges – Challenges to collect, dodge, timed lap – and repeat these over different maps.

The default game controls are done by tilting the screen to steer, and then using buttons on screen to brake and use items & special abilities. You can also change to touching the sides of the screen to steer, which works fairly well. For the tilt controls you may need to change to sensitively.

The graphics and sound are very good, the characters look good and similar to their movie counterparts.

There is only one big difference between this release and the iOS version, and that is the lack of Multiplayer options on the Touchpad.

On the upside:

  • Fun to play
  • Several game modes to try

On the downside:

  • Lack of Multiplayer mode.
  • The game feels a little aged compared with games on iOS like Sonic & Sega All-Stars.

Overall, this is a good karting game and probably one of the best games available on the Touchpad at the moment. The lack of multiplayer is noticable for me as an iOS user, but new Touchpad owners may not mind this. If you are looking for a fun and playable game on the Touchpad, then get this.
