Blobster is a bizarre gooey adventure released by Chillingo Ltd.

Blobtopia is at risk from some nasty pollution from the evil Big and Powerful Corporation, and it’s up to you to help!

There seems to be a lot of pull back and fling games recently, like Sticky and ToFu, Blobster follows this style of gaming and gives its own twist.

This game is simple in design. You need to navigate your way through a platform level to exit by a pipe on the far side. On the way you will find power-ups that can help you grow (to jump higher) and things like shields and rubber rings (so you are not killed immediately by water). The levels are populated with the usual enemy creatures and pitfalls to avoid.

The ability to grow and the power-ups add to the game greatly and can switch the ways which you can complete the level.

The game is fairly large with over forty levels to play through. There are ten basic levels in each area, with a few bonus levels. These bonus levels can be unlocked by getting good percentages on each of the levels on that area. However, there is a bonus level on each area that is locked unless you sign up to the crystal online service.

The game is control by touching the left and right of the screen to move and then you jump, by holding blobster and pulling in the opposite direction you wish to jump in.

The graphics and sound are both good. Blobster is cute and the game has a nice cartoon feel. The sound effects and music as both well done.

On the upside:

  • Cute game.
  • Interesting power ups.

On the downside:

  • Tricky to control sometimes when trying to correct jumps etc.
  • Some levels are locked unless you sign up on crystal.
  • Not universal – iPad version has to be purchased seperately.

Overall, I found myself enjoying this game. The levels are small taking now more than a few minutes to complete and the new creatures and powerups manage to keep things interesting. The controls can become tricky at times, especially if there is goo in the middle of the level (level 7 of lush caverns) but in general work well. This is a great game for the casual gamer who wants to play a level and then come back to the game later.
