DEFLEX is a relaxing puzzle game released by Llamasoft.
DEFLEX is another retro style game made by the legendary Jeff Minter.
The game itself is a strange mix of bat and ball, as you need to clear levels by bouncing the ball into all the “enemy” objects on that level.
The basics of the game, are there is a ball that bounces round the screen on the vertical and horizontal axis. You need to place a stationary bat (using one of two onscreen buttons) to deflect the path on the ball into the target objects (some objects move and others are stationary). There are things that complicate the game, such as walls. If you take too long between hitting targets then it is game over and you need to play the level again.
Controls are limited with the two buttons you only real way to interact with the game. When you press one a bat will appear were the ball currently is (the angle of the bat depends on the button pressed)
The graphics and sound are very retro indeed. If you are a fan of Jeff minters game then you know what to expect, lots of floating sheep, bulls and yaks, with lots of wacky colours.
On the upside:
- Relaxing gameplay
- Retro style heaven
- Nice use of sound when the objects are hit.
On the downside:
- The controls – no real way of removing a bat that has been placed by accident, which could mess up the whole stage.
- Repetitive gameplay, OK in small doses.
Overall, this is a new puzzle game and can be both reflexing and annoying in equal measures. Once you have go use to the game you will more than likely enjoy it, but many people will not stick out the learning curve. Llamasoft make some great games, but they do it there way. This is going to be yet another love it or hate it title for many players.
