Marathon 1 is a remake of the classic FPS and is released by Soli Deo Gloria Productions, LLC.

This application puts you in control of cyborg security officer who is trying to defend the Marathon colony ship from alien attack by the Pfhor.

You need to navigate your way through the game, moving through rooms, corridors and air ducts to fight the never ending hordes of the Pfhor.

The gameplay itself is OK, the controls work well, but will not match using the mouse. The game offers four levels of difficulty. Weapon switching is a little slow.

The graphics and sounds are similar to the retro original, and you can even purchase an HD version of the game.

On the upside:

  • Retro Classic
  • Solid FPS shooter action

On the downside:

  • Gameplay is repetitive and could do with some tweak.
  • Controls are good, but need some tweaks (you may find one of the options available works for you).
  • Slow loading at the start of the game.

Overall, I am a bit split on the rating to give this application. As a retro remake it is solid and plays well. The controls are fine and with some tweaks could be excellent. However, I am really not a fan of these Doom style FPS games, with their pseudo 3D. Basically if you loved Doom or Marathon than this one is well worth a look, especially as it is free. If you think it looks dated or hate retro stuff like this, then avoid.

Rating: 74%

Size: 67.8 MB

Price (at time of review): Free (for in-app purchase for HD version)
