Street Fighter IV Volt is a 2D fighting game released by CAPCOM.

As long has you have not lived in a box for the last twenty years then you will know that if anyone speaks about computerised fighting games, then Street Fighter is always going to be mentioned.

Street Fighter IV Volt is the latest version and carrys on the Street Fighter tradition, 2D fast and playable combat.

The original Street Fighter IV was released last year. Volt is really an update to this it uses the same game engine and expanding onto it.

Volt adds new characters to the game and the main new feature is online gaming (the original SF IV had versus via Bluetooth). By default online gaming is on in Volt, as I found as I tried a single player game for the first time and it was interrupted ten seconds into the match. I found the online generally stable and free of lag, but it did lose connection at time, but this only seemed to happen when I was winning games, so most likely the other player quit out of the game.

The gameplay is excellent as always, the fighting action is fast and the controls work well. You can set the difficulty and fighting aids to help you as you learn how to play the game.

The game is controlled by a virtual joystick for movement and then four combat buttons to punch, kick etc, and work surprisingly well.

The sound and graphics are both good, and what you would expect from any street fighter game.

On the upside:

  • Excellent fighting action
  • Online gaming works well
  • Profile and Achievements give rewards for playing

On the downside:

  • Surprised that the online is on by default (if you wish to practice offline first)
  • Could have almost been an update to the original Street Figher IV app.
  • Not a universal app.

Overall, this is another great Street Fighter game, if you have played it in the past you know what to expect a fast and fun combat game. If you already own the original Street Fighter IV game and are not interested in the online gaming then there is not much here for you (apart from new characters). If you do not own, but like fighting games then get this now before the price goes any higher.
