BACKSTAB – REVIEW (75%)

25 Jun

BackStab is an action adventure game released by Gameloft.

The game puts you into the role of Henry Blake, a royal navy officer who is framed for an event and wrongly imprisoned, and you are out for revenge.

The story starts with a prologue to the imprisonment, so you get an idea of the people, events and background. I really liked this prologue especially with the free roaming of the area.

The story line then has you trying to escape your imprisonment and then trying to gain venegance and then takes a bit of a strange twist in the middle of the story.

The gameplay is very much in the style of assassin’s creed, and will have you leaping from roof to roof, climbing building, hiding from guards and even big jump attacks from roof tops.

The game is controlled by a virtual joystick, and then buttons that will appear as different options are available in the combat or location, so stand next to an item, and if it can be picked up a hand button will appear.

The sound is excellent with good music and voice acting. The graphics are mixed, with some great graphics at time, but poor animation or polygon counts (some peoples faces seem to be made up of a cube with a small bump for a nose, and then a drawing of face slapped on top) at times can make others laughable.

On the upside:

  • Assassin Creed gameplay
  • Big story line
  • Lots of side missions and things to do outside the main quests.

On the downside:

  • Can crash from time to time during loading
  • Camera angles at times are terrible, and in combat can become unusable until you run away
  • Game engine need improvement.

Overall, this game is a good game, but it is a bit of a disappointment. It seems to lack much of the polish of our Gameloft titles and just has a few flaws that dull the experience. The game engine seems to be much the blame, and I hope that a patch may improve things. I would suggest that if you are not a big fan of Assassin Creed gameplay or pirate style tales then it way be worth saving your money until an update is released, but if you love your pirate games then get it now, just keep your hopes at middle level.
