Galaga 30th Collection is a collection of classic titles and is released by Namco Networks America Inc.

This application has been released to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Galaga, which was released on July 23rd 1981.

The application offers up four retro titles within one package, however, for the free download only Galaxian is free, the rest need to be unlocked with in-app purchases, the titles are:

  • Galaxian
  • Galaga
  • Gaplus
  • Galaga 88

The game offers a coin system so as you play the game you gain coins, which can then be spent on generally shot lived upgrades to help the next time you play the game, such as extra lives and fire power.

The basics of the game, are similar for all the titles. Survive wave after wave of attacks shooting down the aliens as they are in formation or dive bombing you. The clear they are when hit the more points they are worth.

The game is controlled by one of three control methods, but they are all generally the same with dragging the finger left or right to move the ship and a fire button (if you have not selected auto fire.)

The graphics and sound are good, but mainly just “shiny” versions of the retro original.

On the upside:

  • Classic Arcade Shooter
  • Several upgrades and enhancements can be gained
  • Universal

On the downside:

  • Expensive to unlock the whole collection (£4.99) for what are 4 retro titles
  • No control methods are perfect.

Overall, this is a nice collection of titles, however, with only one unlocked for free, and it not even being Galaga is a bit of a disappointment. That said the games are still fun to play and bring back a lot of retro memories. If you loved any of the titles in the past then you will find the new versions fun as well. Hopefully Namco will reduce the price of the in-app purchases a little over time, but from their other titles it seems unlikely.
