SPOING [IPHONE] – REVIEW (81%)

14 May

Spoing is a platform puzzle game released by Chillingo Ltd.

The idea behind the game is that Spoing tries to help his friend, but guarding the rainbow diamonds while he visits a sick family member. However, when Spoing is on guard a mysterious green fog appears and he falls asleep, when he awakens he finds the rainbow diamonds missings and sets out to find the thief and get them back.

Spoing makes he way through the levels (caves) by launching himself up from one platform to the next in order to explore the cave and find the rainbow diamond at the end of each. There are around 50 or 60 levels to explore, and every ten caves are limited by a point and level quota, if you do not have enough you will not be able to continue without replaying some of the levels to get a better score.

On you way you will have to avoid enemies who will try and attack you.

The game is controlled by dragging Spoing back on a platform to launch him catapult style. You can also tilt the device to effect the flight path a little. You can tap on the screen to place green gems if you have them to make a temporary platform.

The green gems are the biggest issue with the game, they are too easy to put down by mistake, and there does not appear to be a way to get them back into the inventory without flying over them again. However, if you were pulling back the platform at that moment, and released with your finger still on the screen a green gem can be placed. This means if you only had two green gems and you lost one, you are unable to get to the next platform until the game regenerates green gems or you restart the level.

The graphics are a nice use of silhouette style graphics. The music and sound are used well, with nice music and a musical cord played each time you launch from a platform

On the upside:

  • Fun platform based puzzle game.
  • Nice use of music and sound.

On the downside:

  • Green gems issue, they are too easy to put down by accident, you need a way to “recall” gems put down by mistake.
  • Sometimes the walls are too close to the launch position to get to the next platform, so when you launch you blow yourself up.
  • Not Universal, have to buy the iPad version seperately for £1.19

Overall, this is another of those games with lots of protential and with a few tweaks in future updates could be a must have application, but the few minor issues it suffers from at the moment just make it fall short. Do not get me wrong it is still a good game and is fun to play, but instead of being always enjoyable, it becomes sometimes annoying.
