Notability is an excellent note taking tool and is released by Ginger Labs.
When you start up the application you can set up subjects (holding areas for your notes). You can either add a note with a subject, or the generic area.
The note taking is very good with lots of screen area available due to the quick access buttons on the header and footer of the page. These can be expanded when needed and closed if not. The Record, Undo / Redo and Export options are on the header, with Insert (images, draws etc), tabbing, bullets and fonts in the footer.
You are able to do some basic layout work with the tabbing, but nothing special.
I really liked the insert options that allowed a picture to be quickly imported, cropped and then a caption added. I took this into a meeting and took photos with the camera of the white board and then added directly into the notes before the white board was cleared. The drawing tool is basic, but allows some quick drawing to be made. You can also add web links.
There are several options for exporting data out of notabilty, including Email, iTunes, Dropbox and iDisk. The exports can be done as PDF, RTF or a Notabilty file you can share with other Notability users.
The application works really well, if I would change anything it would be better control over the recording (allowing them be renamed) and more outlining being able to move around text without the need to cut and paste.
On the upside:
- Easy to use interface.
- Adding an image or hand drawn image to your notes is so simple.
- Lots of great export options.
On the downside:
- Default font it too big.
- Rename recording would be useful.
Overall, this is an excellent note taking application, especially for students, making notes in a lesson is a breeze. It is a steal at £0.59 so I would grab it now. There are a few tweaks needed to the application, but in the main this is probably the best note taking application at the price. I think I will be using Notability in meeting from now on as it is very useful tool.
