THINKBOOK [IPAD] – REVIEW (82%)

02 May

ThinkBook – Write, Plan, Outline and Take Notes is an application from Bitolithic.

The application opens to a demo document showing some of the functions of the application can do. You can then start to create a new book or page and start work making notes.

Most of the application is controlled from the tab arrow on the right hand side of the screen, this allows you to add notes, todo, project, questions, pages and books. In addition it also controls the clipboard.

You can add a page then start to type your notes. There is an additional keyboard line over the standard keyboard, which allows quick access to some of the note taking options and navigation of the page, especially helpful in the outlining option.

There are several options for import (using text files) and backup, this can either be done via a direct import from iTunes or via Dropbox.

The application has a lot of potential, but falls a bit short in some areas. I would have been happier if the books and pages were split in a more visually style, I even managed to create a book without a name, and even when I named it the contents tab remained blank at the top of the screen.

On the upside:

  • Nicely laid out user interface
  • Excellent Outlining tool
  • Question and Answer option is useful

On the downside:

  • The application has some stability issues, especially on the iPad 1
  • Sometimes tapping does not respond the way you expect, such as trying to call up the keyboard.
  • An undo option on the tools would have been useful.

Overall, this is a very good note taking tool, it works well as an outlines and to-do list. The user interface could do with a few tweaks to make it more user friendly, and it is worthwhile reading the help text to so all the options available and how to use them. I think with a few tweaks this application will become a must have note taking tool. At the moment, it is showing its potential and I look forward to seeing it in full. If you are looking for a note taking tool then this is well worth a look especially at its current price.
