A.I.R Defense HD is an action defense game released by Chillingo Ltd.
The idea of the game is that you have been given the responsibility by the air force internation regiment to defend various areas from enemy attack.
There are two main modes, campaign mode is wave based with you defending a building for several waves, and then the campaign will move onto the next building. The survival mode, is survival versus endless waves of vehicles.
The basics of the game, is you need to defend the building on the level, you can purchase aircraft with the money available, and upgrade these (like towers in other defence games) and then manoeuvre them to attack the oncoming forces. The building itself has a last line of defence if you lose all your aircraft, but this will not help you long term. There are several powerups and cash air dropped into the levels during play.
The game is controlled by dragging a path for your aircraft to take (flight controller style) over to vehicles you wish to attack, when the attack is complete the aircraft automatically returns to base where they re-arm.
The graphics and sound are good. The graphics are vector style, which is an interest choice, and gives the game a retro feel.
Having played the iPhone version, this version is easier to control due to screen size and feels like the game is more suited for the iPad.
On the upside:
- Nice twist of the defense games.
- Fast paced defense action.
On the downside:
- I would have preferred a little more space for aircraft, sometimes you are limited to only five or six.
- Your aircraft pilots will mindlessly follow the paths even if a bullet is travelling down it, so you either need to let it take the hit, or forget about your defense to get it to dodge the bullets.
Overall, this is an interesting twist on the tower defense format, mixing itself with the traffic control games in the market. The game works well and has a retro feel. I feel with a few updates this game could become one of the best defense games around, but at the moment is a little too limited.
