STAR WARS: EMPIRE AT WAR [MAC] – REVIEW (81%)

21 Apr

Star Wars: Empire at War is a Real Time Strategy game (R.T.S.) and is released by Aspyr Media Inc.

The game puts you into the middle of a war on the between the Empire and the Rebellation, during the game will encounter all the iconic ships and vehicles, as well as a few of the major characters from the Star Wars IV, V and VI movies, like Darth Vader, C3PO etc. The game itself is set a few years before Star Wars IV.

You really need to play the tutorial missions first to get a feel for the game and how it works, the tutorials are done well and allow you to learn the game modes step by step.

The story mode allows you to play as either the Empire or the Rebels with unique missions for both.

There is also a galactic conquest and skirmish mode.

There are also multiplayer modes which at present is only available over a LAN network to other Macs.

The basics of the game are the same for both the space and ground combat with you highlighting troops and moving them around the map.

The graphics and sound are excellent. You are able to zoom in and out on the battle field so you can find the size of display that works for you. The cut scenes are done via the movie mode of the game graphics, so can look a little low res at times.

On the upside:

  • Well designed user interface.
  • Very Good single player campaigns and fun skirmishes.
  • Good multiplayer

On the downside:

  • More for people who have played R.T.S. games before hand.
  • Management of the planets is a little complex to start with, but you will get use to it.

Overall, I really enjoyed this game, both as a fan of R.T.S. games and Star Wars. It does not have much in the side of resource management to control (gathering money via planets own and other sources), and is more combat driven. The game controls do get a little getting use to, but work well when you do. If you are a fan of Star Wars and not played an R.T.S. before you may find this a hard learning curve. This is a solid Star Wars release and well worth getting for fans.
